Your favorite pet of all time?
Okay folks, let's talk about pets.

In your lifetime, what's been you're all time favorite pet? I.e. the most loving, loyal, smartest, most fun, what have you.

It's a toss-up for me. It might be my golden retriever Sarah that I had growing up. We got her when I was 8 and she was 5. One of my mom's friends was holding two golden retrievers who they were fostering after the couple who owned them divorced. After she offered to give us one, and after I begged my mom to agree, I went over to my mom's friend's house to see them. One was athletic, active and spritely. I'd throw the tennis ball out to her, and she'd grab it, drop it at my feet and run back to expect the next throw. Her sister was a lot slower and low key. I'd throw her the tennis ball and she'd catch it, and then she'd circle once, plop down and sit. Of course, I always liked the underdog, so I took the slow one, Sarah.

From that moment on, Sarah was "my" dog. Every night she'd sleep right below my bed. I'd walk her around the neighborhood and I'd take her out in the back yard and play catch. As I mentioned in another thread, she was the absolutely most sweetest, most loving, friendliest (yet far from overactive) dog I've ever known. I only heard her growl once--once--at another dog. She only barked when she wanted to go inside or outside. She never put up a fight when she had to take a bath.

She lived until she was 13. When she passed, she did so in her sleep. Thankfully, we never had to contemplate having to put her down.

My other favorite pet was my cat, Basil, a black and white tuxedo cat, who came into our lives a little bit after Sarah died. I only had Basil for less than two years, but she turned out to be quite a cat. She was a wild cat who hung out around my dad's garden. Slowly but surely, we put food out for her, and she would come closer and closer to our house. Still, she was a little afraid of us--until one day when we came home and she was in our garage with three little kittens with her. The kittens eventually all got adopted, but Basil suddenly became tame and friendly to us. I would come home some days and Basil would run (not walk, but actually run) up to me. I'd never seen a cat so affectionate as Basil. As a special treat, she loved to snack on potato chips. She was probably the smartest cat I ever met too, as she would actually come when I called her. All this from a cat who once was too scared to even walk up to you.

Unfortunately, despite being domesticated, Basil was still very much an outdoor cat who didn't like staying inside. And very sadly one day apparently she was out by the road of our house and was hit by a car. I don't know if I ever cried as hard as when I found out. But even though it was a short life for Basil, she was still an incredible pet who I'll never forget.

1. Has to be Bahkitty.
He started out as Bobcat (scruffy orange/white tabby), but he was too sweet for such a fierce name. So, then it became Bobkitty, but being a somewhat lazy family, it became Bahkitty. He showed up on our patio one day while we were grilling and never left. Sweet cat. Had a meow that could curdle milk (which he subsequently taught our next rescue) and was dumb as dirt, but what a snuggler! Got along with the neighbor cats who partly lived with us (I guess you could call them community cats-they went into who ever's house they felt like that day) and loved our future rescue kitties like they were his own. Slept with me every night. Never ran away or disappeared when we moved. Never knew how old he was until the end. The vet figured he was around 12, so that would have put him at about 6 when he first showed up. Getting a little weepy now thinking about him. He was great cat who passed in his sleep and my brother-in-law buried him under his favorite tree.

2. I have been blessed with wonderful companions
my whole life, but my favorite was my cat Spencer. He was the most sociable, loving soul I've ever met. I lost him in July and it still hurts.

5.
This was a tragedy  You have to soon forget the pain and remember just how great he was.
I love his picture, that look in his eyes :loveya:

My favorite love-wise is Tonka I think, but he's who I have now. There was also Jules, the smartest cat ever, I got a tattoo of her.

This is Tonka with his chicken hat, I think he thinks it's foolish!

6. They all have been priceless to me.
I have eight right now and each one has his/her quirks that I love. I recently lost this beautiful girl and really miss her. She used to put a paw on each shoulder and sort of give me a hug. She did it one last time as we walked into the vets office for the last time. She used to sit right by my chair and if I didn't give her enough attention she would jump up and "punch" me in the arm to let me know I should be petting her. She came to my home pregnant and house broke her pups for me. The pups are still here and remind me of Angel every day.

Angel.

9. The Big A, hands down. BEST CAT EVAH!
invited himself to move in my house and stayed for 8 years. Smart sweet handsome big cat.

The Big A was one of his many nicknames..his official name was Atlas.

Still missed after 22 years! My daughter was about 18 months old when we lost him and she will be 23 this month.

10. it would be my long-gone cat, Scooter
Edited on Tue Nov-06-07 11:47 PM by MonkeyFunk
He was such a sonovabitch. He would attack me in my sleep. He'd lay in my lap for half an hour, then bite me.

He was a right bastard. But I got him when I was 23 and I kept him through many housing changes and financial insecurity.

I had to have him put down when he was 16. His dying act was to reach out and claw my brother - he left three claws in his hand. I still have the claws in my display cabinet.

I adored that cat.
