My grandmother died this morning, at the age of 87. She had suffered from Alzheimer's disease for about ten years (she was officially diagnosed after my grandfather died in '96, but looking back we think she may have been exhibiting symptoms before then). For the past five years or so, she had not known who I was or who my brother was, and at my cousin's wedding two summers ago, she didn't recognize my mom, either. Over the course of the past year, she had slowly forgotten my dad (her son), as well as my uncle and cousins who lived near her. My aunt came to visit her every day, but I don't know if she even recognized her anymore near the end. Anyway, it's kind of a mixed blessing, I guess, because my grandmother had pretty much zero quality of life - my mom said that the Grandmother we had known "died" several years ago, because of the Alzheimer's. :cry: It's still really hard on my dad, though, and I could use some of those famous Lounge vibes for him and my aunt especially, as well as the rest of the family. :hug: Thanks guys.

which is about a 3-hour trip, so that shouldn't be too bad. From there, my family is going to drive the other 7 hours together, so hopefully we'll be OK. :hug: I can't imagine what that must have been like for your sister. :hug: to both of you (and the rest of your family as well)!

It's heartbreaking, but remember that somewhere inside that tangle of confusion and memory loss were memories and the person she was.
