Nice sounds that you like.
Right now I'm really enjoying this sound at the end of Radiohead's new song Videotape. It's percussion and probably some synth but it sounds like a train and I just like it so much.

Do any of you seem to fixate on certain sounds that you like? I hope I'm not the only one.

Doesn't have to be from music... just any sound...

2. The sound of the trains at night
during the day (if I'm home) I don't notice them. But at night, they're like old friends.

:)

3. A short train whistle in the middle of the night
When I used to put on long nights reading and studying (accounting) in college I used to hear train whistles and know that someone else was out there too at those ungodly times of night.

I say SHORT train whistle because hearing a LONG train whistle is bad bad news-it usually means someone is on the tracks. Old Railroad guy told me that if you spend any time on the railroas sooner or later you will hit someone.

4. I watch the first half of the Big Chill last night.
It's free on OnDemand. Anyway, in the opening funeral scene, Kevin Kline walks to the church podium and you can hear the squeaking of the floor boards and the sounds of his shoes against the wood, and how it all reverberates in the hall. Not my "favorite sound" but incidental noise often perks up my ears. I especially like it when a good sound engineer picks it up in a movie and gives it a little showcase.

On the flipside, I hate the sound of people chewing....especially my mother. Stop that damn lip smackin', woman!

6. Pages turning.
And I like to look at people's hands as they turn pages. It brings back associations of being a kid, staring open-mouthed at the teacher reading to us. THERE was a Democracy.

Do you record them? I like to keep their phone messages and even use a cheapie tape recorder to get their voices for future listening. :)

17. Rustling paper
Edited on Thu Nov-01-07 04:36 PM by Oeditpus Rex
I find it soothing. No idea why.

There's a Monty Python animation with hands folding a letter, putting it in an envelope, then removing and unfolding it, with amplified audio. I wish I had that on an audio loop; I could fall asleep to it or just use it to relax.

Oh, another one: I call it "highway hum." When I was a kid and we'd go on non-camping vacations, the sound of trucks going by on the highway lulled me to sleep in motels. It wasn't just the trucks, though; it was if there was some sort of energy radiating from the highway that had a sort of whisper. It's a nice memory.

26. "Hallelujah" on my cell phone
No one ever calls me on it except my best friend, and he's on the opposite coast from me so it's always a good thing when my phone rings.
And of course happy cat sounds, and birds eating on the back porch.

All music is beautiful but the first notes of this song are so sweet because of the song coming up :D
