This rather puerile focus on this sole issue by the American media (incidentally it’s gotten very little coverage here) belies the fact that Rudd is a well-educated former public servant, diplomat and Member of Parliament who speaks fluent Mandarin and who played a key role in leading his party’s opposition to the Iraq War and has been a highly effective parliamentary debater who has frequently kept our right-wing racist, sexist, Bush-loving government on the defensive throughout the year and who staunchly and passionately defended Barack Obama and the Democratic Party when our Prime Minister attacked both of them earlier this year. He has gotten to where he is now through a lot of hard work and persistence –his family went through a stage in his youth where they were forced to live in a car after being evicted from where they lived and he hitchhiked his way from Queensland to the national capital to attend university (which is a VERY long way to hitchhike). He has risen from poverty and obscurity to within striking distance of the nation’s top job.

His policies are left wing –he supports many of Al Gore’s environmental proposals, universal healthcare, withdrawal from Iraq, Aboriginal reconciliation and a whole lot of other policies which I frequently see championed here on DU. He has recorded some of the highest approval ratings that have ever been seen in polling history and has taken a center left political party that was on the verge of political oblivion to a position where it could now very well win an unprecedented landslide victory in just ten months. He could just as easily be another Clinton, Obama, Edwards or whoever else and yet I see people dissing him here just because of one incident

He’s infinitely better than our Prime Minister–a right-wing neo-conservative whose government has taken ethics violations and corruption to new levels and who Bush has looked up to as an inspiration and has adopted some of his electoral strategies –and who has returned the favor by bashing John Kerry during the 2004 election and, as mentioned above, attacking Barack Obama for wanting to withdraw US forces from Iraq. The same Prime Minister who has made life much harder for those with disabilities, the mentally ill, single parents and the poor and disadvantaged in society through his right wing economic policies despite the record prosperity that the country is enjoying. A Prime Minister who has echoed * on almost every foreign policy issue and has promoted many of the same right wing policies and ideology on social issues at home. The same Prime Minister who once said that gay marriages shouldn't be allowed because the main purpose of marriage was to have children and who also said that he would feel ashamed if his son came out of the closet-and whose record on GLBT issues has been appalling? A Prime Minister who has refused to apologize on behalf of the government to indigenous Australians who were forcibly taken away from their parents and families and placed into white families so they could be assimilated into white Australian culture?

Rudd represents the best chance we’ve had in over a decade to ensure that Australia becomes a much more progressive and compassionate country at home and overseas. I’ll be voting for him on November 24 based on his record and character rather than one stupid video on YouTube.
