3. Setting a date for the wedding
"What is the closest you came to tying the knot?"
I got as far as two and half months prior to the wedding.

"What stopped you?"
I saw some ugly things in her for the first time I knew I wouldn't be able to live with...
like whoring around like the common tramp she was-- do I sound bitter? Good.

9. Loonie tune
My partner-to-be were dancing around the subject. I was nodding along. Then one day she confessed. After being together with all that sensual activity and feeling so good, she then felt terribly guilty for it. Catholic guilt. Common sense woke me up - Ciao!

And to think I turned down casual sex offers from other women when I was with her. I regretted being a good guy in the end.

During my travels, I'd had offers so I could live in Europe or New Zealand. I wised away from some, while circumstances prevented others.

26. I was engaged when I was 25
Announcement in the paper and everything.

About a year later I lost my job, then my confidence. Started drinking, became an asshole, etc. etc. etc.

It was better that way, though. She married a 400-pound alcoholic redneck, moved to New Mexico and subsequently became a bitter redneck herself. (She actually told me she blew a guy at a sports-talk radio station for hockey tickets.)

after 10 years of manipulation and verbal abuse.

It involved shoving butts out of doors (instead of throwing them down three stories of stairs) and lawyers (no guns) and MY money.

edit: That was 10 years ago. I've only in the past couple of years decided that dating might, MIGHT be a decent idea again. I'm not bitter; just scared to repeat that mistake.

33. I have been in two long term relationships
it seemed like we were married already. We lived together. I'm glad I never married my ex, we would have wound up in divorce. It was just not a dire need for me. Then I was single and commitment free for about five years and was enjoying myself.

And then my fiancee came along. We've been together going on five years but have still not gotten married. We will get married probably be next spring.

Didn't set a date for the first one, haven't set one for this one. We keep saying it's because we're broke, but I'm beginning to think maybe we'll never get married. My sis dated her husband for 10 years before they tied the knot. So, I'm in no hurry.

She went psycho this summer and all paranoid towards my parents. It was an extreme-control freak/smothering personality which did not come out previously. Her way or the highway, so highway it was.

Edit: It was turned into nothing BUT the wedding, like it was some magic cure. Nothing mattered but keeping on schedule for planning (which was WAY ahead of schedule). Jeckel and Hyde when the ring went on.

46. she wanted a pet, not a husband
I fell for a woman who had money and I can honestly say I didn’t care about the money. She made her money in .com’s then went to do charity legal work representing poor fathers in child custody cases. However as she got older and richer she became extremely possessive and I wasn’t looking to be a kept man. Had she wanted children it would have been a pretty simple economic equation that I should stay at home with them – but she didn’t. She literally wanted me as a pet.

I still really care for her, she is the most caring and generous person I have ever met, but she came to see the rejection of financial support as a rejection of her.
