What food quirks do you have?
:) I have a couple. I always reach for a corner brownie first. They're chewier and have more "edge" on them....:9 Also, I love pudding skin, so whenever we make pudding at home, it has to set up at least a couple of hours before I eat it. :D (That means that instant pudding is banished at our house!)

Also, for you Southerners, I will only eat grits if they have sugar and butter on them. :P

Next!

It's almost kinda gross but I love it that way.

Oddly, I rarely use pepper for seasoning unless the recipe calls for it

I won't eat capers. I banged my head once so hard that I got this metallic taste in my mouth...ever since, the taste of capers brings that back, unpleasantly, so I won't touch 'em.

Anything served with Fries: I have to eat the fries first...will eat any hot-food-gone-cold except french fries.

Oh, and cherry tomatoes...no way. I love tomatoes in all formats, but the little bite-size ones, NO way. Why? Rather not get into that....

66. My best friend in childhood used to put ketchup on his vanilla ice cream.
He swore it was great, but I could never bring myself to try it. I used to stir my vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup around and around, until it was all homogenized in one soft bowl of chocoloate-flavored ice cream.

98. I don't think so. The physics of that says otherwise. You are adding energy with the
stirring. Some of that energy is going to change to heat from the friction. Unless of course you have the bowl sitting in a heat sink - otherwise known as an ice cream freezer.

Natto is a food that made my wife gag when she tried it. It's soybeans femented with a bacteria. They smell and taste extremely strong and have mucusy texture when stirred. They are a huge delicacy in Japan and I eat them just about every day. They are extremely good for you.

36. I love apple pie....
I love apple pie...but I don't like apples. I don't like any real whole fruit really--something about biting into something you've got to hold, and then having to look at it half eaten in your hand, really turns me off. Plus for some weird reason I hate that "crunch" sound that people make when they bite into an apple or other type of hard fruit. Weird OCD quirk of mine.

Yet put it in a pastry, caramalize it, and I love it.

I get all my Vitamin C and other fruit benefits from Orange Juice. I love orange juice, but again, not a big fan of oranges themselves. I actually love orange juice so much that if I don't have it in the morning, I feel incomplete. Even worse than when I don't have coffee, and that's saying a lot.

I've learned to like burnt cookies - the trick is to eat them burnt side up so your tongue doesn't hit carbon first.

I've never understood eating organ meats, feet, or spine, etc. even when I ate meat.

I will mix almost any type of leftovers - Mexinese, Indican, and Thaitalian are some of my favorites. It's not that I prefer to do so, but it doesn't bother me, and sometimes I discover new flavor combinations.

I am very adventurous with new cuisines.

29. I get annoyed when people cut off the tip of a wedge of brie or camembert
If you have a round cheese, cut it into wedges (like a pie). If you have a wedge, cut slices from the side of the wedge (from the tip to the outer rind).

The center or tip of the cheese (especially brie and camembert, or some blue cheeses) is considered by many to be the best part. If you are a guest at a party and start cutting the tip off, guests after you will be left with the rind. Cutting it from tip to rind will ensure that all guests have the chance of getting a "fair share"

My mom is French and I might have inherited her Cheese-Nazi Gene. Should you ever go to France, never ever break the cardinal rules of cheese cutting ...or...:

32. I don't mix my food--I eat in order up to the main food
Edited on Wed Oct-31-07 03:25 PM by PeterU
For example, if I have green veggies, potatoes and a steak, I eat the green veggies first until they are done, then the potatoes until they are done. And I eat the steak last, because the steak is the main part of the meal. It's the climax of the meal. For me, mixing the different foods on my plate would be like fast forwarding and rewinding a movie and watching in no particular order.

If I go to a restaurant and order a burger in fries, I'll always eat the fries first and then the burger. And more than once I've had the waiter/waitress come by and ask me if there is something wrong with my burger because I haven't eaten it yet. I inevitably have to reassure them there is nothing wrong with the burger, that I am just weird in the way I eat.

60. With pie, I'll eat out the filling first and then eat the crust.
Same with desserts with graham cracker crusts.

I love to eat chili, lasagne, and casseroles cold.

No milk at all on my flavored instant oatmeal, the only kind I'll eat.

68. I won't even eat the crusts or the whipped cream.
I'll eat the filling out of the pie, carefully extracting it from between the crust and the whipped cream. I'll throw the crust and whipped cream away. They are bland and fattening. However, I love graham cracker crusts so I will eat that.

62. I'm very picky about my peanut butter and dill pickle sandwiches:
1. It must be *white toast*.

2. Butter toast well.

3. Spread with *crunchy* peanut butter only.

4. Cover entire surface with sliced dill pickles.

5. Place second piece of toast on sandwich.

6. Cut sandwich *corner to corner* only.

7. Eat round cornered half of sandwich first. *Never* eat pointy half first.

64. My big quirk about eggs...
I cannot stomach even the slightest sign of runny whites. But I love runny yolks, so it's damned near impossible to make me a perfect fried egg.

78. Try covering your egg with a lid while frying.
The steam will actually cook it enough to get an easy flip with less chance of yolk breakage. It really stops the whites from remaining runny. I also use olive oil to fry my eggs. :9

67. George Carlin used to ask, "When you make a sandwich,
do you reach past the first 3 or 4 slices of bread, to get the "good bread?" I laughed because this is what I do. Only when there's nothing else left will I use the heel or the slice next to the heel.

69. I Have a Method For Eating Greek Salad
It sounds almost fetishistic trying to explain.

It has to be a very good one, with everything including young, small anchovies and a few pepperoncini on the plate. But I combine maybe two of the strong-flavored items at a time with the lettuce: a slice of red onion with a chunk of feta cheese, a bite of the hot pepper with an olive, an anchovy with a tomato. Then I alter the combos the next round. It's like I don't want to be too overwhelmed by the flavors, or I want to experience them in every way.

I'm also a chewy, crusty corner brownie lover!

74. I don't eat salad dressing
People can't understand it. I also dislike: eggs, mustard, mayonnaise, sweet pickles, mushrooms, squash, canned vegetables (can't stand the smell either), lobster, crab, oysters, salmon, sushi, peppers, olives....it goes on and on and on. I am a very fussy eater and it drives my family and friends nuts.

I also will not buy generic or store brands of anything even when I know the store brand is the same thing as the name brand.

And I put ketchup on mac and cheese.

and I store them with slices of bread, to keep them soft & chewy. :)

I'm not a picky eater, though... so I don't have many quirks.

Wait, does not drinking anything while you eat count? I dunno why, but I usually don't.

82. Then allow me to introduce you to the holy grail of chocolate chip cookie recipes:
Alton Brown's chewy recipe. I'll never use another recipe again, just this one. You'll note a few changes from the back-of-the-chips-bag recipe, like using bread flour, and melting the butter before creaming it with the sugar (and the sugar and egg proportions are also different). These stay chewy for days, uncovered--but they probably won't last that long.

Just a few dislikes, I guess I'll eat pretty well anything, except cauliflower and Marmite, the two most vile things ever placed on the planet.

The rest of my family, though, will take cheese dreams -- you know, broiled open-face bacon and cheddar sandwiches -- and put strawberry jam on them. Ugh! And they think I'm weird because I like to put poached eggs and salsa on them.

96. Oh jeez...where to start?!
Ok...

I won't eat any shellfish/crustaceans other than clams and lobster.
The only fish I have really ever liked are haddock, tuna, and shark.
I will never touch brussel sprouts, b/c my Mom had a horrible allergic reaction to them when I was little, and they scare me.
I hate cabbage. End of story.
I smell everything that I eat before I bite into it, even if I cooked it myself.
Under- and Over- done pasta enrages me.
I think that chicken is boring and bland, unless it's fried.

I'm sure there are more...

97. Not picky at all and pretty adventurous, I'll eat just about anything
EXCEPT...

anything in the licorice/anise/fennel flavor family.

The mere presence of a single fennel seed can render a whole dish revolting to me. :puke:

Also, when I was a little kid, I used to drink a glass of lemon juice after school the way most kids do orange. I also liked to eat yellow mustard out of the jar with a spoon. My guilty secret is, I still do.

For a woman, I'm pretty indifferent to sweets. Most of my food cravings are for spicy or salty or savoury things. I'll take a hot sausage or a flavorful cheese over chocolate any day.

101. My dislikes are mostly texture-based....
Eggplant, for example, is something I can't stomach unless it's pulverized to remove it's texture. Same thing with mushrooms- I love the flavor, but the texture makes my skin crawl.

I also like the corner brownies, and when baking cookies will sometimes slightly over-cook one batch on purpose- I like them extra-crispy.
