Firefox users...need help, please.
Edited on Wed Oct-31-07 08:58 AM by Jimbo S
I had to move some folders around on my hard drive so my wife could use a CD tutorial. Now I can't remember the original location of the folders. When I use Firefox, the browser is unable to locate the favorites. I know where the file containing the links are, I need to get back in the correct location so my broweser can pick them up. I use Windows XP.

What is the filepath your favorites folder is located? Thanks to all those that respond.

On edit: by favorites I'm implying the bookmarks.

3. I can't remember for XP
What you could do is, in firefox click on "import bookmarks", and then guide it to wherever your current bookmark file is. It will import it, and then drop the new version wherever it wants it.

That should solve your problem.

4. Thanks.
If that doesn't do the trick, I could always see if Mozilla has a help site and go there.

5. Start menu -> Search -> For files and folders -> All files and folders
Enter bookmarks and click search.

8. Thanks. This is what I was looking for.
Right now I have two folders that contain bookmarks.html:

E:\Program Files\Mozilla\defaults\profile

and

E:\Applications Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

"E" is my hard drive. The top line pretty much matches what you have. I'll put zaround when I get home tonight.

7. Lost bookmarks recovery - Firefox or Mozilla Suite
Edited on Wed Oct-31-07 09:46 AM by Breeze54
Step-by-step bookmark recovery

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Lost_bookmarks

If you don't see your bookmarks when you open Firefox or Mozilla Suite, the bookmarks file may have been damaged or the contents deleted. Firefox automatically makes up to five daily bookmark backups, with newer backups replacing the older copies, so you must act quickly, before they are all overwritten. However, there are other reasons why your bookmarks may be missing, so it is important that you follow all of these steps:

1. Firefox and Mozilla Suite store user data in a separate place for each user account on your computer. Make sure you are logged on to your computer with your usual logon name.
2. Mozilla browsers allow you to store different sets of bookmarks and other user data in separate profiles. You may have created a new profile in the past for troubleshooting or other reasons. Make sure you are using the correct profile (see Multiple profiles and profile in use, below).
3. If bookmarks appear in the Bookmarks Manager but not in the main menu, and they can't be edited, try the fix for a corrupt localstore.rdf file, given below.
4. If your problem is still not solved after doing the above, see Finding your bookmarks and Restoring bookmarks from backup (below). To identify the correct backup file, you can open and view bookmarks files with your browser.
5. Other methods of recovery

Preventing future problems... more....

-------------

Firefox and Mozilla Suite store bookmarks in file "bookmarks.html", located in the profile folder.
There is also a "bookmarks.html" file in the program folder, but this one is only a template and does not hold your bookmarks.

9. My solution
I ended up doing Manage Bookmarks|Import|Import From File
and imported the bookmarks.html file that was in the Apps folder.

Then it created a second subfolder in the same profile folder as the first subfolder. Then I dragged and dropped to clean things up in the Bookmarks under the browser's menu bar.

Still can't figure out why the browser wouldn't locate the bookmarks.html file that always existed. Oh well, it's fixed now.

Thanks to all who helped!

10. I strongly recommend this extension
Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer

If you use Firefox on more than one computer, you'll want Foxmarks. Install Foxmarks on each computer, and it will work silently in the background to keep your bookmarks synchronized. You can also log in to my.foxmarks.com to manage your bookmarks from any computer.

What's more, if you lose your bookmarks like you did, you can just get them back from Foxmarks.
