Halloween Pet Peeves
A discussion about this broke out at work so I thought I'd pose the question to my fellow Lounge Lizards. What are your Halloween pet peeves?

I hate the recent trend of plain-clothed teenagers "trick-or-treating" for money. :wtf:

Also, kids that are too pushy and demand more candy. Greedy much?

1. I see your older teenagers, and raise you minivan/SUV caravans
Edited on Tue Oct-30-07 10:47 PM by Richardo
..imports from other neighborhoods, or cities even, discharging a dozen kids at a time then taking off for another neighborhood.

I really really hate Halloween. I'm the Halloween Scrooge, the All-Hallows Grinch. x(

4. You haven't experienced that?
Edited on Tue Oct-30-07 10:54 PM by Richardo
You're lucky.

One year, we had our entire candy supply drained in about 20 minutes by vanloads of kids from outside the neighborhood. They'd park the vans, the kids would go up one side of the street and down the other, get back in the vehicles and take off. Terrible.

8. That's awful
Fortunately I've never come across that. Back east, we had lots of kids in our neighborhood and no one drove in from outside.

Now I'm in an apartment complex, but it's a large one that's a neighborhood unto itself. Sadly I won't be giving out candy this year because I work evenings.

5. i am well familiar with the caravans
an old boyfriend of mine lived in a nicer neighborhood and people from all over town would bring their kids there on halloween....we'd go through three or four big bags of candy in about an hour and the damn greedy kids would keep ringing the damn bell after we turned the light out. they'd keep ringing the bell even if we ignored it and then get shitty with us when we told them there was no more candy

i have no patience for crap like that

11. We get that in our neighborhood too
The first Halloween I gave out candy I simply couldn't believe the number of "imports" came around. The worst I saw however was last year. This new Mustang pulls onto our street and parks at the first house. Out get the driver, a teenager, and 2 of her friends, also teens, dressed like, well, either Brittany Spears or cheap whores. They went up to the door of the house, got candy, got back in the car and drove to the next house. This was repeated up one side of our street and down the other. The frontage on our lots is roughly 70 feet, so we aren't talking long distances. I was furious when I saw them coming towards my house and went inside, turned the lights out and called it quits for the evening.

I'd be an import you speak of. Well, unless she was in training for track and field. That's the downside to you guys putting your houses so close together.

Hec, it's Halloween. I really love when one of you go all out decorating. It adds so much to the event.

From all of your neighborhood invaders of happy kids getting candy you give them, I thank you.

I live in an apartment building in an urban neighborhood where no kid in his right mind would trick-or-treat because it's just not a trick-or-treat conducive area. Most of the buildings are secured, and contain single, one and occasionally 2 BR apartments predominately rented or owned by younger people or older people who don't have children - most of whom don't even bother to buy Halloween candy because no kids ever come by. That being said, there are SOME kids living in the area, and so what are they supposed to do?

Of course I realize there does exist that subspecies of human who actually aid and abet their kid's preferred treatment of the night as some kind of supermarket sweep where the objective is to cover as much of the town as they can in their alloted amount of time for the purpose of accumulating the largest pile of candy as the laws of physics allow, and I'm sure you're mainly referring to them, but perhaps also consider the others.

12. Same here. When we first moved in, there were tons of
van caravans from really rural areas where there weren't a lot of houses. Now, not so much as the area has grown. I was surprised by it at first, but it's not a big deal to me. I love Halloween. It's the only holiday that doesn't have the accompanying familial guilt associated with it.

16. Halloween (Observed)
Manchester's brain trust has decided that it is better to hold Halloween on the Sunday before October 31, with trick-or-treating during the early afternoon. As a result, half of the people forget that it's "Halloween", and the other half are busy watching the Patriots and forget to answer the door.

23. WTF?
I've heard of this in other places but NEVER in New England.

Manchester ought to be embarrassed.

Keep Halloween on Halloween. Let the kids have their traditional fun in the traditional ways.

I'm stunned that could happen in New Hampshire. I figured that would be the last state ( besides maybe VT) that we'd see something like that.

Color me surprised!

26. The thing about Manchester...
...is that nobody ever accused the city fathers of being over-endowed in the intellect department. The average alderman is a 70 year old retired government employee, so their perspective tends to be more than a little crimped.

Which is weird, since you have two Halloweens. We actually get more people on Sunday, the actual day, than on Saturday. I don't know why they do that.

42. I live in Utah for 15 years...
the reason they do that is because of the "popular religion". They are not allowed to do anything like that on a Sunday, the day of rest...I'm surprised they celebrate it at all! I hated it when they would change the date! My poor son missed more than one switched Halloween! Although one year I gave him all the candy I had bought, he was very happy!

21. Havent seen any of that
Kids here are not greedy or looking for money. Perhaps it's just the area.

My pet peeve is fundies that get their panties in a wad over celebrating an "evil pagan holiday" and then turn around and call it a harvest festival (which, by the way, pretty much equals "sacred feast day in pagan-ville) keeping most of the same traditions. Somehow they think running from the Christian name it was given to a more pagan version of the name, keeps it more Christian.

Confused Yet?

Yeah....they are not to bright.

31. Must be a NY thing
This is only my second Halloween out here in Arizona but I didn't see any of that last year.

But yeah, the fundies. How dumb are they? Samhain's a harvest festival! You're just bringing it closer to its roots.

My fundie-related Halloween peeve are those BS tracts they pass out with the "real history" of Halloween, and good old Mr. Sam Hane, Lord of Death. My conclusion is that books written by people who are not fundies are like Kryptonite to them. Maybe the words are too hard. :P

How are you celebrating this year? When I get off work I'm helping my friends pass out candy and then we're having a dumb supper. All of us have had important people pass this year so it should be interesting.

24. Halloween
Don't like it. Don't like the scary stuff that goes with it. Don't like costumed animals. Don't like office costume attire. Don't like kids wearing sleazy costumes. Don't like the idea of teaching kids to beg - and to "trick" if there is not treat to reward the begging. Bah humbug. There is no candy in this house and the porch light will be off this evening.

But I don't mind if you celebrate. Be safe.

32. Pumpkin smashers.
When I was about ten I hid in my parents Chevy Nova in their driveway, with a Casio keyboard, waiting for someone to come attempt to steal our pumpkins. I was going to emulate the sound of a siren (with the keyboard) when the jerks showed up.

I got bored after about twenty minutes and gave up. In retrospect, it was a weird and dorky idea.
