Satellite view of the CA fires
http://www.space.com/imageoftheday/image_of_day_071023.html

In perspective, the ovoid bowl area just above it is the San Joaquin Valley, which is enormous. Correct me if I'm wrong.

1. That is an amazing photograph!
And, yes, that's the San Joaquin Valley.
I live there.

2. That ovoid bowl area is the San Joaquin Valley and Sacramento Valley...
We call it the Central Valley. A line between Lake Tahoe and San Francisco might be considered the dividing point between the two, where the Sacramento and the San Joaquin rivers meet in the delta.

4. Ouch-- Great photos!
I find the shapes of smoke through atmospheric currents to be beautiful, but I wish that this wasn't the source.

9. Wow, I did some time in Camp Pendleton.
By the way, watch yourself out there. I don't want to have to break in any replacements on my "DU CRUSH LIST."

13. I'd have checked sooner if I remembered you lived near there.
On this thingy it sometimes gets hard to think of people as living 1000's of miles away.

Glad to hear you will not be scorched.

6. I'm sure there are, but I don't know the links.
I found the OP photo while I was browsing space.com, not looking for fire pix. Anyone else?

It's tragic to see these large fires, but the NASA site has some amazing photos of the whole planet. Thanks for posting the link to you photo source.

8. Port of Los Angeles
Edited on Wed Oct-24-07 07:23 AM by Popol Vuh
Looking at the pics Whoa_Nelly posted. See where it indicates Los Angeles? Follow that cost line south until you see the Palos Verdes/San Pedro peninsula. On the south side of that point underneath that smoke is the Los Angeles/Long Beach harbor.

Here's a photo I took while at work yesterday late afternoon. The sun is just above San Pedro.
