I'm getting used to ignoring the sounds of my roommate having sex
with her boyfriend. I mean, they're entitled to their energetic, frequent, enthusiastic sex life. Good for them. :toast:

But geez, they're being just a little EXTRA enthusiastic in there right now.

My bedroom is next to hers. I'm sitting here on the far side of the apartment because I really don't want to be on the other side of her bedroom wall for about the next hour or so. :P

1. Here, have an earworm.

Duncan

Couple in the next room
Bound to win a prize
They’ve been going at it all night long
Well, I’m trying to get some sleep
But these motel walls are cheap
Lincoln Duncan is my name
And here’s my song, here’s my song.

My father was a fisherman
My mama was the fisherman’s friend
And I was born in the boredom
And the chowder
So when I reached my prime
I left my home in the Maritimes
Headed down the turnpike
for New England, sweet New England

Holes in my confidence
Holes in the knees of my jeans
I was left without a penny in my pocket
Oo-we I was about destituted
As a kid could be
And I wished I wore a ring
So I could hock, I’d like to hock it.

A young girl in a parking lot
Was preaching to a crowd
Singing sacred songs and reading
From the bible
Well, I told her I was lost
And she told me all about the Pentecost
And I seen that girl as the road
To my survival

Just later on the very same night
When I crept to her tent with a flashlight
And my long years of innocence ended
Well, she took me to the woods
Saying here comes something and it feels so good
And just like a dog I was befriended, I was befriended.

Oh, oh, what a night
Oh what a garden of delight
Even now that sweet memory lingers
I was playing my guitar
Lying underneath the stars

Just thanking the Lord
For my fingers,
For my fingers

3. This song is definitely not what I'm hearing over and over again.
:P

I have pink floyd on the stereo right now. It's not helping, and I really don't want to turn it up any louder.

Damn, I wish I was having that good an evening.

5. Can I safely assume that was in a dorm room?
That's the only place I've ever heard of people having sex with a captive audience. :)

Yes, it is inconsiderate. And, yes, I definitely appreciate that wall. They're both really nice people, and they're a very cute couple, and I really never expected to know so much about their sex life.

50. Horrible freshman year story
Liked the girl who lived next door. Girl starts dating my best friend before I could ask her out. Best friend and girl have sex to the Smashing Pumpkins, all of which I could hear on other side of wall, frequently. Sex sounds mixed in with "Today", over and over and over.......

Never could listen to anything from "Siamese Dream" again.

They had been interested in one another on the sly before I really even got to know her. And he really didn't become my best friend until right about the time they started dating. He sort of figured it out later, as did she and she would use me as a "Why can't you be more like <Rhody>" when they fought. It was very weird.

9. Have you investigated sound source machines? They will blank out pretty much any noise.
Edited on Tue Oct-23-07 10:44 PM by Radio_Lady
I have one from Marsona which allows me to attach a headset to it. It plays the sounds of summer with birds and crickets, windchimes, heartbeat, the ocean, sea with tugboats, and several others.

I don't have roommates, but I have a husband who snores and who also loves to watch killer action movies right before bedtime. My two best friends while bedded down with him on vacation -- were my mp3 player with classical music, and my sound source (a tiny one which I got from Radio Shack). These items are very inexpensive these days.

Good luck to you... and them. Sigh... I remember being in college... a female-only dorm with curfews (10 PM ON SCHOOL NIGHTS) ... no men or sex allowed, at least, none that I know of!

Respectfully,

Radio Lady in Oregon

29. Try a cheaper model.
you don't need all the Ipod bells and whistles if you're looking for distraction and sound elimination. They sell FM radios at the dollar store . With earbuds. One buck.

OR go the Deluxe route and get some Bose noise eliminator headphones.

27. Granted, this could potentially make things even more....
awkward, but have you casually mentioned the lack of soundproofing to her?

I think you are being lovely and generous about it, but it could be considered inconsiderate behavior, just as if she were playing her CDs at full volume.

Do they ever give you a break and spend the night at his place?

32. They spend a fair amount of time at his place.
I think if I said something she's be mortified and she's make sure they never spend the night here together again. I don't want her to go to that much trouble over an amusing inconvenience. So I won't say anything.

He is moving from his parents place (where, no doubt, they have to be far more careful about what they do and how loud they are) into a cramped little studio appartment next to campus. Our apartment here is much more comfortable.

My roommate's a bigger geek than I am and as far as I know, he's only had one girl over in the entire 2+ years we've lived in this apartment. :P

Granted, I haven't done much better what with the whole night shift, no money and no life thing.

But at least I got to despoil his new couch only a day or two after he got it...

51. One of my college roomies had this, um, problem as well.
She was very vocal. Like, for the longest time we would refer to her as "Lassie" (from the character in Porky's) but we never told her about how loud she was.

However, during exams one year she kept two of our other roomies awake and one of them was so pissed off that she actually *called* the other one Lassie the next day. Of course, the whole truth came pouring out and "Lassie" was mortified but kept saying "why didn't you just TELL me?"

That said, I recommend talking to your roomie. A little "hey, this is sort of embarrassing but..." might go a long way. And let you sleep. Of course the, um, entertainment value might be something to consider as well. Good luck!
