got fired today
hey everyone....I needs a hug

Late in August my boss went into a violent rage at me in front of other staff. I reported it to our Board of Directors (I work at a non-profit), a few days later I received a discplinary letter basically saying that if I don't keep quiet and "tow the line" I will be fired.

He has now resigned, one of the witnesses is now executive director, and I was fired today.

I loved my job (I worked as an elder justice advocate and for 3 years helped to bring the issue to hundreds of Minnesotans)

I told the new boss on Tuesday (he witnessed the rage and attack) that I was afraid to be in the office during my old boss's last week because now he has nothing to lose and clearly holds resentment towards me. I was verbally told that I could take the week off. I was fired for my unexcused absence this week...even though I had permission.

so I am crying - it is for the best because who wants to work at such a place, but I am going to miss my clients

1. Check into employement law in Minnesota
You might have a case for unlawful termination. I'd look into filing a complaint with whatever agency is responsible. At least get a hearing out of it.

2. Hot damn, but that sucks!!
How unfair of them. Can you at least get unemployment?

I'm sorry this happened to you. I always expect more from non-profits/charities, yet I'm oftentimes disappointed.

Sounds like you got a bum deal. FWIW, when I got fired over 20 yrs. ago, it was the best thing that ever happened to me. Good luck.

That sounds like a horrible situation all the way around.

13. I agree with those who have suggested you contact a lawyer...
and review Minnesota employment law.

It sounds like you are being made a scapegoat for your ex-boss' bad behavior.

Good luck.

14. I'm sorry
but hey I got an it can be worse(I think)to make you feel better.

I was working as a sales agent on a newhome track, got into an argument with the broker, he told me to take a week off. When I called back he told me he didn't need me anymore. OK, fine! but he purposely switched some contracts around and delayed 12 closings past my 30 day grace period and I just lost out on $40,000. See it can be worse......

I'm really sorry for what happened to you but like you said its for the best. Its gonna take some time but it will get better.

Talk to the state labor board. See a lawyer. Really. I know you may not feel like it now. You were tricked. You were deceived. You didn't deserve that. Don't let them take anything else from you that is rightfully yours. Please? Think about it at least.

17. There IS no protection in the workplace, I am convinced of it.
I was in a workplace where I was afraid for my safety, and I went to every higher up I could find. Not ONE thing was done.

Our work car was vandalized twice in 48 hours,

One of my work mates had the experience that someone brought a cement block to his hOUSE and heaved it thru the patio doors at 3 AM,

I had a work knife broken off in my car tire--and it might have been broken off while parked at MY HOUSE on the weekend.

Any one of these things in isolation would have been icky to deal with but not any reason for paranoia. This all happened in one week--within a few days of us talking to the local newspaper about issues in that office (and about a year AFTER I'd gone on record officially saying I was afraid in the workplace.)

This guy had made non-specific threats (like "I'll get them..." he'd tried to physically dominate people, and multiple women had testified that he had messed with them...

When I was asking for help I was told there was nothing to be done unless he ACTUALLY did anything and they caught him doing it. Yep, you saw that right--they couldn't do anything until he HURT somebody and got caught for it.

We finally got police protection in our office because he scared hell out of the HR Director. It still took them a week to fire him, but at least there were men there to protect us if it got too strange.

It takes a while to get over this kind of crap, and I realize you are bummed (and pissed) at the job loss and at how you have been treated. I want to offer up one question for you to consider:

Have they taken any steps to protect the employees who are still there?

If they haven't, they should have. You may be lucky to be out of there for a while.

Call a lawyer in the meantime...

Laura
