First, my brother-in-law (the triplets' grandfather) was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He is having surgery on Tuesday. The prognosis is good, but we are all hyper -- including my 92-year-old mother who suffers from chronic clinical depression, an anxiety disorder, agoraphobia and somatization disorder.
Second, my sister's and brother-in-law's dog (belonging to the triplets' grandparents) tore a ligament. He will have surgery later in February -- after brother-in-law recovers somewhat. He is being a brave man to have this done for his dog, because the recovery is difficult (carrying a 50-pound dog in and out to the yard to do his business) while b-i-l is recovering. Meanwhile, the poor dog will be on pain meds for at least a month and then after while he recovers.
Third, my nephew (the triplets' only uncle) is in the National Guard and being sent to Afghanistan for the spring offensive. He will be gone for at least 365 days, getting his ass shot at. He got out of the regular Army last June. Spent his time at Schofield Barracks. Had to withdraw from college yesterday and visit his girlfriend's parents to tell them the bad news. We have not yet told my 92-year-old mother, who is still dealing with the news that her son-in-law has cancer. We don't know how she will cope with her grandson going into combat.
This is all in January. How much worse can the rest of the year get?
