Skunk remedy - bookmark this thread in case you need it
Edited on Tue Oct-09-07 04:39 PM by MonkeyFunk
This works! The dawg had a run-in with what he thought was a stripety cat the other day. took a direct hit.

1 quart 3% Hydrogen Peroxide (get a new, unopened bottle - it turns to water after awhile)
1/4 cup Baking Soda
2 tsp. liquid dishwashing soap

pour it all together - it'll probably bubble up a bit. don't let it sit too long, though.

Scrub the dog. This sounds easy, but a dog who's just been skunked is probably not much in the mood for your ministrations.

Edit: Be careful not to get it in the eyes. The dog won't like that much.

Let the wet, angry, soapy dog sit for 5 minutes or so.

Rinse the dog.

If you do this twice, the skunk smell will be all gone. I expected the smell to linger, at least slightly, for a few weeks, but I can't detect anything on him. Oh, I also doused him twice with Summer's Eve douche - also known as a good skunk remedy (and makes me REALLY wonder what women are using it for :scared:)

Forget tomato juice - it doesn't work. Mythbusters did an episode on this, and the recipe I posted above was by far the best solution.

5. The funny part
is the two have co-existed peacefully for a couple years. The skunk is always in my yard, the dog always barks at her, but they seemed to have a truce.

Then, the other night, the barking was worse than usual, and I KNEW something was up. My boyfriend went out back, in the pitch dark, to see what was happening. I turned on the light, and saw the BF standing about 2 feet in front of Mrs. Stinky. I yelled at him to STOP MOVING! and she toddled off. The dog, by this time, had already been sprayed and was off around the side of the house, muttering doggie-swears.

Oddly, I didn't smell a thing. Then we got the dog, and smelled a not-really-strong, but acrid, smell of garlic and tomatoes. Maybe the skunk was Italian?

it was only after about 10-15 minutes that it really started to smell like skunk. Then.... Holy Mary on a tortilla, it REALLY smelled like skunk! Everywhere!

We washed the dog with the recipe above, but wasn't able to do a thorough job due to the dog's agitation. So we went to the supermarket to get more peroxide and baking soda (and a bottle of wine - that's for the doggie-daddies).

As we were buying two quarts of peroxide, one box of baking soda, one 4-pack of douches and a bottle of merlot, the cashier stopped. She called another cashier over to her station and asked "Do you smell something? I think it's my register. It smells electrical." The other clerk smelled her register and said "Yeah, I smell it, but it smells like wet dog."

We barely got out of there without cracking up.

wet, angry, soapy boy. Planning his revenge against you!

Hope he's feeling better and smells like a rose! (Who am I kidding...he's a DOG! But I bet it's a lot better than he smelled awhile back!)

11. he smells better than he has in months...
as I said, he HATES baths. But we cleaned him real good. He was totally demoralized by the experience, but I actually enjoy sniffing my dog now.

7. I've heard this one before. Apparently, the peroxide and baking soda make a kind of
"scrubbing bubbles" effect that helps lift the skunk-spray oils off the dog.

Makes me wonder if a dab of vinegar in the mix might not help as well? I believe that vinegar is one of the ingredients in the douche product that you've found to be effective.

10. I boiled off a quart of cider vinegar
in the house to help rid the stink. It worked.

13. To summarize. You peroxided your dog's hair, but he's not a stinking blond?
