Confess!!!! Who/What shouldn't have been nominated for an Oscar this year

I think folks know where I stand about that girl from "Whale Rider". I think either Scarlett Johannason (from one of her 2 roles) or the girl from "thirteen" should have gotten the nod instead.

I think Maria Bello should have gotten a "Best Supporting Actress" nod, but I'm not sure who she could have bumped from the list.

What's your thoughts? Which movies and/or actors shouldn't have been nominated.

1. Master and Commander

Now, don't flame me. I enjoyed the movie, it was suprisingly good, but one of the 5 best of the year? Nah. But then, as Mrs. thunk says, if I deem a movie to be "fine, I guess" then it's probably one of the year's best.

2. I thought

Kill Bill should've been nominated for best picture, and Sir Ian McKellan should've been nominated for supporting actor.

4. It's a shame that all the LOTR actors have been ignored

in all 3 movies. I saw a documentary on Biography and the actor that did Gollum really was amazing.

6. that dude that plays gollum...

he needs a freakin oscar for at least one of those movies, he stood in in a motion capture suit and did the voice and basicly made gollum what he is. that man is talented.

11. Welllll...

That'd be kind of unfair. It wasn't just Andy Serkis' performance that made that character (though I agree that it was an amazing performance), it was also a huge team of artists and animators using a massive array of state-of-the-art equipment. No other performer in the running had that, so it's an apples and oranges thing. He should rightfully get some kind of special nod, though. What he achieved is surely going to be definitive.

Speaking of Serkis, I can't see him in anything now without thinking of Gollum. He's amazing as Martin Hannett in "24 Hour Party People," but the Gollum thing is always going to get in the way of whatever he's in, like how nobody can see Curtis Armstrong without thinking of Booger from "Revenge of the Nerds."

9. Ian McKellen was nominated for The Fellowship of the Ring

But you're right, the rest of the cast should've received some Oscar love as well, especially Serkis in The Two Towers and Astin in ROTK.

3. Chris Cooper in Seabisquit

was dis-quietingly GOOD and I was crest-fallen when he was not nominated. His is a luminous, touching, humane performance and the glitzy Academy totally missed it!!!

Also...Albert Finney in Big Fish. Did you see Big Fish? Certainly one of the five best films of the year.

Also, Patricia Clarkson's work in The Station Agent deserved an Oscar nomination in the supporting female actor catagory.

7. I can agree with that one

I thought he was better than William H. Macy (who was nominated for Seabiscuit). Ironically, I thought Macy was 10 times better in "The Cooler" than "Seabiscuit", but he was a starring actor "The Cooler" not supporting

Macy got nominated for Seabiscuit? Damn, he was annoying, and the only character in the movie who wasn't a real person. Cooper is the choice here.

5. pirates of the carribbean

sure give it a nomination or two for costume design and makeup... but depp's acting was good, but not great... i found the whole movie overacted. and there are defenatley visual effects out there. i donno, mabye i just dont get it.

10. The following shouldn't have been nominated

Seabiscuit for Best Picture-Pretty standard stuff, nothing really special about this other than the beautiful cinematography.

Brother Bear for Animated Feature-Though I can't say who I would put in its place.

Sound Editing-Master and Commander. Loved the film, but this is the weakest of the nominees and LOTR should be taking this, no question.

And who were the most notable snubs?:

Sean Astin and Andy Serkis-Astin is the heart of the final chapter, and is splendid. Serkis's role isn't as big as ROTK, but he's still marvelous.

Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King-Where were the nods for cinematography and sound effects editing?

12. American Splendor

I'm seriously bummed that all it got was a nom for best adapted screenplay. And it's not just 'cuz I'm in Cleveland, either - formally, that was a risk-taking, groundbreaking film, and it worked magnificently.

20. Yes, American Splendor was a great movie ...

.. but a much more cynical man than me might suggest that it was the fact that it was a risk-taking, groundbreaking movie that ensured it didn't get a nomination.

He could've played that role in his sleep and I'm glad the Academy just didn't give him a nod b/c he's Jack. I'm glad my man Johnny got a nod eventhough I didn't see the film

18. In American should

have gotten more nominations. I think it only got the one for the woman as best supporting actress (I'm not sure if it got a screenplay nod) but it was onle of my favorite films of the year.

19. I just saw the movie "Thirteen"....

....and now I'm convinced!!! There is no one, no way that can convince me that the girl in "Whale Rider" deserved the Oscar nomination more than the girl from "Thirteen". That lead in "thirteen" was absolutely amazing and portrayed such a range of emotions.

21. A few minor quibbles...

"American Splendor" should have had more nominations. Best Picutre, replacing "Seabiscuit".

I would have liked to have seen Hope Davis in Supporting Actress, but I don't know who to take out, I loved all five of the nominated performances

Paul Giamatti in Best Actor, replacing either Depp or Law.

Scarlett Johanssen in Best Actress, replacing Samantha Morton.

Peter Saarsgard (Shattered Glass) in Supporting Actor, replacing Djimon Hounsou.

I liked "In America", but Paddy Considine and the girl that played the older daughter did the best jobs.

"The Station Agent" got shutout, thought the screenplay would get a nod, but "Dirty Pretty Things" sort of came from nowhere. I need to rent that...
