post some good old fashioned biblical truth!!!!
-if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out.

-it's better to dwell in the corner of a rooftop than to share a palace with a scornful woman.

-a man must set aside his childish things.

1. Love your neighbor as yourself (Jesus). you shall not cheat one another. (Lev 25:14)
And Numbers 35:14-15

you shall designate three cities beyond the Jordan, and three cities in the land of Canaan, to be cities of refuge. These six cities shall serve as refuge for the Israelites, for the resident or transient alien among them, so that anyone who kills a person without intent may flee there.

And then as Joshua further elucidated this law in Joshua 20:3-6

so that anyone who kills a person without intent or by mistake may flee there; they shall be for you a refuge from the avenger of blood. The slayer shall flee to one of these cities and shall stand at the entrance of the gate of the city, and explain the case to the elders of that city; then the fugitive shall be taken into the city, and given a place, and shall remain with them. And if the avenger of blood is in pursuit, they shall not give up the slayer, because the neighbor was killed by mistake, there having been no enmity between them before. The slayer shall remain in that city until there is a trial before the congregation, until the death of the one who is high priest at the time: then the slayer may return home, to the town in which the deed was done.'"

46. The admonition to love ones neighbor as himself ...
...strikes me as an impossible standard. Christianity contains many impossible standards of conduct designed so that people fail, feel like they failed and, therefore, accept that they really are doomed sinners if they do not accept Christ and the authoritarian power structure that goes with him.

48. All of Jesus' standards are impossible - that's the beauty of them.
Edited on Fri Oct-05-07 11:52 AM by Rabrrrrrr
Doing the minimum is not a good enough ethical standard, he says. Go further than you think you need to.

Your understanding of Christianity is deficient, however. SOME Christians act the way you prefer to slander the entire religion with. Not all. And in my opinion, the way you characterize Christianity is not Christianity, but an example of a failed church and bad doctrine.

50. First, you conceed that they are impossible.
So that's a nonissue. Requiring impossible standards is unethical in and of itself. The purpose of impossible legal standards is to put people in constant fear of state retribution. The impossible standards of Christianity are to put people in constant fear of damnation and, therefore, beholding to the church for "forgiveness."

"...the way you characterize Christianity is not Christianity, but an example of a failed church and bad doctrine."

So the Christianity that actually exists is not the real Christianity. I have heard that a lot recently. Many people are uneasy about the atrocities commited by their religion, past and present. "Real" Christianity is what is practiced by Christians. I don't really care what your particular heretical beliefs are, I am looking at the actual, brand-name religion as it is actually practiced.

By the way, it is libel, not slander. Slander is spoken. And only if the statement is false.

(and thanks for the libel/slander info - I constantly mix those two up; now that I look, I see slander and spoken start with "s" - maybe that will help me remember).

2.  Matthew 6:5-8 (Hmmmm, wonder who this might fit??)
When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners so that others may see them. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go to your inner room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.

23 From there Elisha went up to Bethel. As he was walking along the road, some youths came out of the town and jeered at him. "Go on up, you baldhead!" they said. "Go on up, you baldhead!" 24 He turned around, looked at them and called down a curse on them in the name of the LORD. Then two bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the youths.

Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth: for thy love is better than wine. and

Stay me with flagons, comfort me with apples: for I am sick of love. or

O my dove, that art in the clefts of the rock, in the secret places of the stairs, let me see thy countenance, let me hear thy voice; for sweet is thy voice, and thy countenance is comely. and finally

Thy two breasts are like two young roes that are twins, which feed among the lilies.

"Thy lips, O my spouse, drop as the honeycomb: honey and milk are under thy tongue; and the smell of thy garments is like the smell of Lebanon.

"How beautiful are thy feet with shoes, O prince's daughter! the joints of thy thighs are like jewels, the work of the hands of a cunning workman.

"Thy navel is like a round goblet, which wanteth not liquor: thy belly is like an heap of wheat set about with lilies.

"This thy stature is like to a palm tree, and thy breasts to clusters of grapes.

"I said, I will go up to the palm tree, I will take hold of the boughs thereof: now also thy breasts shall be as clusters of the vine, and the smell of thy nose like apples;

"And the roof of thy mouth like the best wine for my beloved, that goeth down sweetly, causing the lips of those that are asleep to speak."

41. 1 Corinthians 13, 1-13. Some of the finest words man ever set down.
1Cor.13
<1> Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
<2> And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
<3> And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
<4> Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
<5> Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
<6> Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;
<7> Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
<8> Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
<9> For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
<10> But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
<11> When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
<12> For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
<13> And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

43. Then did he raise on high the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch,
saying, "Bless this, O Lord, that with it thou mayst blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy." And the people did rejoice and did feast upon the lambs and toads and tree-sloths and fruit-bats and orangutans and breakfast cereals ... Now did the Lord say, "First thou pullest the Holy Pin. Then thou must count to three. Three shall be the number of the counting and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither shalt thou count two, excepting that thou then proceedeth to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the number of the counting, be reached, then lobbest thou the Holy Hand Grenade in the direction of thine foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it."
