I'm one. Swore off veal 20 years ago. Anybody else?

I eat meat but I won't contribute to the terrible practices used to raise veal.

8. Sort of - but only because I don't like it very much
My mom used to make a wicked veal scallopini when I was a kid (although it had no resemblance to what the rest of the world calls scallopini, so maybe it wasn't even veal), but other than that I find veal kind of bland...

nor do I eat venison because of Bambi which is really sort of a stupid rationale. I would be more upset if people hunted deer and DIDN'T eat them but I can't bring myself to do it.

14. No! I used to play with those sweet little calves, as a child.
I never knew why they were in a stall by themselves. They were so much fun and really enjoyed it when my brother and I would play with them after school.

And yes, there is veal that is raised in non-industrial operations in which the veal DO get to enjoy life.

23. I don't eat veal.
Not for ethical reasons, because if that were the case I'd stop eating meat altogether. I just don't like it.

I've thought about becoming a vegetarian for ethical reasons for a long time, but like a good procrastinator, I haven't gotten to it yet.

26. I don't eat veal, most red meat, fish, meat on a bone,
meat with visible fat, seafood, or most pork products.

That doesn't leave a whole lot. I was a vegetarian from about age 14-19.

32. I rarely eat veal because of the price differential.
I usually go for the less expensive cuts of meat. Amazing what can be done with the cheaper cuts.

I don't care for veal, never really liked it, even before I learned of the inhumane practices used to produce it.

Now, if we're talking some beef brisket, pork shoulder or spare ribs, let me get my smoker ready :)

34. There are a few restaurants in this country that produce the best
Veal Piccata, Veal Parmesan, and Veal Marsala.

I can't prepare veal as well as they do, so I don't buy it to prepare at home, but I can't pass it up sometimes when I know it'll be done right.

35. No; it goes back to my mom not having cooked expensive cuts of anything. Also I no longer eat beef.
Don't get me wrong: mom was a terrific cook, she just didn't have much money to work with. Things like veal and lamb simply were not on the menu, so I never developed a taste for them, any more than I developed a taste for squid.

I've been cooking for many decades now, but along about the time I might have tried veal I saw those nasty ads about how the calves are treated.

And thanks to the threat of mad cow disease I no longer eat beef at all any more.

39. I'm not vegetarian....but I have a lot of problems eating stuff like veal.
Edited on Tue Oct-02-07 01:09 PM by Evoman
Actually, I feel super guilty when I eat anything but fish or seafood (and even that's making me feel guilty after reports that we are raping the seas).

I'm not a vegetarian any more, although I have tried it several times. I'm too ignorant and lazy to be a vegetarian for very long. I have some vegetarian dishes that I like, but for the most part I don't cook very well without meat. You also have to be careful about getting all your proteins...and since I work out and ride my bike quite a bit, I find it hard to get the protein I need on a vegetarian diet. If I eat to many beans and nuts or drink too much milk, I get major gas problems. Soy just doesn't seem to cut it, either. It can be done, for sure, it's just tough.

However, I don't eat a lot of red meat...mostly just chicken and fish. And I try to respect the sacrifice (however unwilling) as best I can, never wasting any of it.

On edit: anybody who wants to give me advice on healthy vegetarian eating (or how to get good protein on a veggie diet), please feel free.
