5 Squirming Fly Larvae Pulled From Colorado Man's Head After Trip to Central America

The Associated Press

CARBONDALE, Colo.

Doctors thought the strange, bleeding bumps on Aaron Dallas' head might be from gnat bites or shingles. Then the bumps started moving.
A doctor found five active bot fly larvae living beneath the skin atop Dallas' head.

"I'd put my hand back there and feel them moving. I thought it was blood coursing through my head," Dallas told the (Glenwood Springs) Post Independent.

"I could hear them. I actually thought I was going crazy."

Dallas said he likely received the larval infestation while on a trip to Belize this summer. Bot fly infections are not uncommon in parts of Central and South America.

Adult bot flies are hairy and look like bees, without bristles. The larvae, which are about one-third the size of a penny, were living in a pit 2- to 3- millimeters wide. They were removed Thursday.

"It was weird and traumatic," said Dallas, of Carbondale. "I would get this pain that would drop me to my knees."

After a specialist told him he might have shingles, Dallas tried different creams and salves. But the pain only got worse.

"When I saw him again, it was pretty obvious something else was going on," said Dr. Kimball Spence, who could see the spots moving on Dallas' head. "There's an open pit. You see a little activity, not necessarily the larvae, but a fluctuation of the fluid in the pit."

Dallas' wife, Midge Dallas, teased him about it.

"I told him, 'I will love you through your maggots,'" she told the newspaper.

But Dallas saw little to laugh about.

"It's much funnier to everyone else," he said. "It makes my stomach turn over. It was cruel."

5. Good idea
Here's a little something to wet your appetite. Now I'm warning you and all other DU'ers, this is one of the most disturbing pictures I've ever seen. I've seen car accidents with severed human body parts strewn out across the highway, and I love horror movies. None of that stuff bothers me. But this picture haunted my sleep for at least a week after seeing it. It is related to the topic in the original post. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART!

But I don't have any bleach for my brain to scrub out the image...

Are there lots and lots of maggots?

Tell me in 10 words or less what the image depicts....

9. Funny you should use the phrase "bleach for my brain"
The picture is of a man whose brain is infested with maggots, AND HE"S STILL ALIVE! Apparently he had some rare type of cancer that eats away the skull and then the brain. Since the brain feels no pain, some maggots decided to set up house there, and the guy wasn't even aware of it because his brain was slowly being eaten away from the cancer. Now, the maggots were just there to eat away the dead brain cells, it's not like they were eating his brain away. Still, the picture is truly revolting.

7. Rats, as long as they aren't rabid, don't bother me!
But I can puke just thinking of the other 2. In fact I did puke once watching Fear Factor when they had to get chicken feet out of a a thing filled with maggots with their teeth! The sound of the maggots smacking made me lose my lunch!

19. heheh but it's true
for as long as humans have been around we have been struggling with parasites. Some doctors actually claim that some modern diseases are due to the fact that we don't harbor parasites like we evolved with.
