Did anyone have trouble in High School?
Edited on Thu Jan-29-04 04:56 PM by Mass_Liberal
inquiring High School student mind wants to know. It just seems harder than it should be. Also, subjects that I liked before like French and Science suddenly suck. :argh:

Enough about me. Tell me about your High School experiences. Did you too have a devious math teacher?

2. I loved every minute of school!
As a teacher, though, I became aware of how hard it is when kids have evil life-sucking, really bad teachers.

4. academic trouble?
If you're having science or math issues, I could help.

I was one of those who had no trouble in those classes, but spent the weekends playing video games with the few people who were as dorky as I.

I seem to have turned out okay, though. (depends on who you ask, I guess...)

7. currently in high school...
and by this time... ive stopped caring... im halfway through my senior year and im going to graduate no matter what now... so its kinda beside the point weather i get decent grades or not, but i try anyway... the only good math teacher ive had was an old lady who oddly, liked to do cartwheels and otherwise ham it up in class, get people laughing then start class... all my other math teachers have been coaches that seem to have a high dislike for me and my anti-school spirit ways. the most trouble i have when a teacher doesnt like me, which happens more often than not.

10. Alternative School saved me
I was an okay student in traditional high school but the social scene absolutely destroyed me. It was without a doubt the most miserable two years of my life until I dropped out. I ended up going to an alternative high school and it worked out great.

Now, I'm back in college studying education so I can be a teacher in non-traditional school.

12. the social scene is my only downfall...
my grades could be better, sure, but im not concearned, pulling high b's is good enough for never really taking the work home with me...

socially? screw it... im a loner no matter where i am and what im doing. i work alone and spend my freetime alone... alone but not lonley, most of the time anyway... ive stopped caring about what other people think of me its not worth the time. dont sweat the social thing... high school is only a few years of life.

9. Yeah - trouble staying awake
It was so dumbed down it was a plodding, miserable experience in the classrooms.

Had a great time in orchestra and drama guild, though, and other than most of my classmates being dimwitted fools, I actaully enjoyed high school.

I just wish it would have been intellectually stimulating.

I'm thankful for the four teachers I had who either let me work at my own pace, or who maintained a high level of intelligence and demands on the students.

And hopefully, ALL math teachers are devious! That's what they're supposed to be, and why math is so gloriously, wondrously, fun. :-)

13. Long ago in a galaxy far far away
yup it was a long time ago. For some reason I have been thinking about it lately, must be middle- aged nostalgia, plus I have a son in school and that makes you think more about how much effort school can be, academically and socially. I was a nerd with really good grades, but what made high school bearable were friends, the activities, yearbook, plays, chorus, and Academic Games, strangely enough. I was able to find a group of people who were nerds AND fun, and that made all the difference. Academically, there were some wonderful teachers and some who read the same notes they made in college year after year! And the advanced math teacher was called "Cemetery Sam;" actually his wit was so dry most kids missed it. So I think what you put into projects determines what you learn in the long run, non-directive teachers can teach you to be more independent.

Being a goody, goody also has its advantages, since you can do stuff that no one would ever expect you to do.

14. Yeah, I just graduated in May...
Freshman year I sat near the waste basket in math, and the teacher used to throw trash at me. I can certainly sympathize with you. A crappy teacher can easily ruin a good subject.

16. Just the traditional stuff: Rum, sodomy and the lash
Actually I was fortunate enough to have (mostly) very dedicated excellent teachers when I was in HS (El Paso in the early 1970s). One class though was hard to get through: physics. Our teacher spoke in a s l o w m e a s u r e d m o n o t o n e .
We sat on tall lab stools and as the lecture went on everyone would start to get drowsy and sway back and forth on the stools until CRASH! someone would hit the floor and wake everybody back up. Mr. Bonhagen though would drone on, never missing a beat. This would happen several times each day. I've always had trouble falling asleep, so I think I only hit the floor once.

17. Never let your schooling interfere with your education.
For me, high school was four years of hell. Was so turned off by the whole formal education thing (thanks to some spectacularly bad teachers) that I didn't go back to school until I was 25...

20. I uh, just got kicked out of highschool last week
I want to wear what I want to wear, and I want to say what I want to say. So obviously the Administrators and I were the best of friends. They less than subtley suggested that they were going to make my life hell if I didn't go, so they pretty much kicked me out, and now I'm going to an alternative school. So yeah, high school sucks. Oh and btw, all my math teachers were crucial bitches.
