So I went to see an up and coming comedian the other day

And though some material was funny, a lot of it was the same old making fun of different groups of people - African-Americans, fat chicks, the handicapped, etc. The audience was howling in laughter, even at the stuff I found most offensive. I tried to be open minded and have a sense of humor about it, but how is calling someone with a glass eye "cyclops" funny?

1. They say the root of comedy is anger

It seems like that anger is more apparent in a lot of the younger comedians. But it can even be apparent in the more seasoned comedians. Remember that great Bill Cosby comedy special that ran on HBO about 20 years ago? A lot of his material seemed to be fueled by anger.

But I do agree with you in that making fun of people for their physical features is not funny.

2. I thought the opening guy was much better.

WIsh I'd caught his name.

He actually did some of the same topics, but his was all directed towards himself and making fun of himself, so it came off a lot better.

The "star" even said several times that he was condescending, and yes he was.
