Poll question: A vitally important poll of great importance: What flavor b'day cake?
Somebody, I'm not naming any DU names but he lives in fl and he's vegan, can't be bothered to tell me what kind of cake he wants me to make him for his upcoming (redacted)th birthday. So I need to decide on something in time to try the recipe out once or twice, order any odd ingredients, etc.

Note: this poll is only about cake flavors. Other factors such as frosting, what body part to shape it like, etc are okay for replies.

Second note: Obviously, if I'm making it and he's eating it, it'll be vegan.

6. Can Vegan's eat cake?
Edited on Sun Sep-23-07 05:28 PM by Tian Zhuangzhuang
I mean the whole eggs part not to mention milk in the ice cream.

Just asking.

:hide:

On edit.... I know there is Vegan "cake". I just think that most store bought cakes and cake recipes are decidedly not Vegan friendly.

8. Answering:

Rich Chocolate Cake

prep time: 15 minutes | cooking time: 25 minutes | makes 12 slices
Well the name says it all. This is the richest chocolate cake around. To make it a 2 layer cake, multiply the ingredients by one half and divide into 2 separate springform pans. If you don't have springform pans, cover the bottoms in parchment paper or it will stick.
Equipment:
springform pans, 2 good sized bowls, a whisk, saucepan

Ingredients
3/4 cup whole wheat pastry flour
1 cup all purpose unbleached flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 cup good cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup plain soymilk
1/2 cup canola oil
1 1/2 cups pure maple syrup
1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
2 teaspoons vanilla

Directions
Preheat oven to 350 F. Spray a 9 inch springform pan with non stick cooking spray.

Sift together flours and baking powder and baking soda.

In a saucepan, heat the soymilk on low-medium heat. When it is slightly bubbling, add the cocoa powder and whisk well until it is dissolved. Remove from heat.

Combine the other liquid ingredients in a bowl and whisk well. Add the cocoa mixture and combine. Add the wet ingredients to the dry.

Pour batter into prepared pan, bake at 350 F for 25 minutes until a toothpick or butter knife comes out clean. Let cool completely and frost with your favorite frosting.

And

YumMAY!

14. Making cake without eggs isn't a big deal, and there's a ton of dairy-free ice cream out there
Yeah, store-bought isn't real easy to come by (though I had some lovely vegan cupcakes in NYC last week, most places are less vegan friendly) but I bake with the best of them. Non-scratch cake would be a bit lame for a birthday anyhow.

I'm not sure if it is possible to do a vegan version and if it is whether it tastes good.

15. I can't think of much I can't veganize.
We made vegan turducken, for heaven's sake.

By comparison, a vegan ice cream cake would be easy.

is there a good vegan baking substitute for cream cheese? Carrot cake has been my birthday cake for a few decades now.

17. if you can be sure it's vegan then carrot cake
most vegetarians i know are crazy for carrot cake, however, some is made with sour cream so you would need to make it yourself (as it sounds like you will do) rather than trust the bakery
