So I'm still getting over the fact that Mirko CroCop's time as one of the elite is probably about up, and tonight we see two more big names go down.
I love Shogun Rua, but I have always had a soft spot for the Chute guys. I remember seeing his premier in Pride while living in Japan, and I have followed his career closely since. I honestly thought Griffin was being fed to him tonight to try and build him as a monster (Griffin is one of the most recognized guys by casual fans these day) destroying a known fighter. Instead we get a potential match of the year ending with Shogun getting choked out with 15 seconds left in the fight. Unbelievable.
Follow that up with the main event where Liddell was given a tin can match with Jardine (He's not a headliner, and, before tonight, he wasn't even remotely close to being a top fighter in the division), but apparently Jardine wasn't aware he was supposed to just fold up and get KO'd. Unbelievable action ending with both fighters just looking beaten up, and Liddell losing a decision that, honestly, wasn't even close. So much for that comeback.
Of course, that also kind of throws out the plans for Liddell/Silva in December, so I'm wondering who Wandi will be fighting first. I'm guessing it'll either being Jardine for beating Liddell or Griffin to play up the Chute Killer vs. Axe Murderer storyline. Either way, UFC is heading in a rather unexpected direction after this PPV.
