It's f*cking 55 above here....
with a high of 61 later today.

I might actually have to wear a long-sleeve shirt...

1. Cordially invite you
to Wisconsin, Minnesota or perhaps even Canada.

Nobody should ever be deprived of the experience of having your nostrils freeze together when you walk out the door. It's a moment I'll always treasure (sarcasm off)

2. I did my time
I lived in the midwest plains (Illinois, Missouri) for about 10 years. Before that, upstate NY, and New England.

I am used to cold weather, and we actually still have a snow shovel, although our neighbors look at it and wonder what it is.

I know all about the nostril freeze.

7. Tell ya what...
you come on down here for a visit in August when it's 110 in the shade with 95% humidity and then we'll see who can take it. :-)

8. No. They can't.
They complain when it's too hot. They complain when it's too cold.

When I lived in Houston, I almost got into a fight with someone because they were "complaining" that it was too cold for them. It was about 50 degrees at the time. I said something like, "For as tough as Texans pretend to be, it seems rather silly that you're shivering and it's only 50."

He came back with something like, "Just because a man gets cold, doesn't mean he's not tough."

So I said, "You're right. But it does mean he's a wuss if he complains about it constantly." He threatened to kick my ass. He probably would have tried if he wasn't so cold. I realize that not all people from the South are like this. Just the ones who were born there.

BTW, it was 2 degrees this morning on my walk from the train station to the office. It's nearly a mile. I just put on my hat and gloves, cranked up My Bloody Valentine on my walkman. Next thing I knew, I was walking in the front door. No biggie.

9. Like anything else, you adapt.
I almost don't notice the heat anymore. If I lived somewhere cold, I'd get used to it. No place is perfect (OK, San Diego is REALLY close), but every place just becomes the place you live after a while.

11. But you're not a native.
And....you lived in the Midwest for a time.

And honestly, the main reason we moved back to Chicago from Houston was....it was too damn hot in Houston. And sure I complained about the heat when I was there, but so did everyone else. They were always complaining about the weather.

Nothing can prepare you for getting in you car that's been parked outside all day in the Texas sun. Nothing. No matter how much clothes you take off, you're still gonna sweat your ass off.

But if it's cold, you just put more clothes on. Nothing to it.

12. That's what I say...there's a limit to the clothes you can remove
...in public anyway. :D

My car has leather seats. Nothing can prepare one for the torture of leather seats sitting outside all day baking in 100-degree heat. Oh, did I mention that I wear shorts in the summer? :hurts: Of course, if I were to move up north, my leather seats aren't heated. :-(

Houston SUCKS in the summer - even worse than Austin. The heat there just suffocates you!

14. We love our bun warmers.
We've got heated leather in our Tribute. Actually, the Mrs. uses the Tribute as her everyday. Nothing like the feeling of that heat rising up through the seat of your pants on a frigid day. Toasty.

I'm stuck with the old Caravan, that I bought in Texas and still has a thermostat that might as well not even be there. The heater core takes about 20 minutes to warm up. But it only takes about 5 minutes to get to the train station, so it never really warms up. Especially on a day like today.

We're only a couple of good posts away from completely hijacking this thread. I wish I had more time.

15. I think if I moved up to a major urban area, I'd just sell the car.
I'd ride the damned train everywhere. Call Enterprise for when you just HAVE to have a car.

I have a short commute - my car doesn't heat up or cool off enough by the time I get home.

4. Yeah...life sure can be tough here...
Republican idiots running things...takes 34873245 hours to leave the state by car...

But the "winter weather" is pretty good.

I did my time in the midwest, too. But only as a kid. Since age 9, I have lived in either Hawaii or Texas. :D
