Name something you've done that defies the odds.
Me?

I took a quiz once in Literature class in 7th grade - it consisted of 15 true/false questions. I had not read the story, so I had to guess at every question, using only my wits, and my razor-sharp intuition to discern the correct answer.

My final score after guessing (with a 50/50 chance on each one) at 15 T/F questions?

A big, fat ZERO. 0 for 15.

I later calculated the odds of this accomplishment. About one in 32,768.

 Go figure.

Have you ever done anything like this?

Please share.

1. I got laid without having to pay for it.
That was a real surprise to me. I thought I'd ALWAYS have to pay for it. Wow. I guess if you knew my history with women, you'd know what kind of steep odds those are. That was practically miraculous that I didn't have to pay her and I got laid. She was foxy and goth chic (aka a goth chick) too. Hummula, baby! What a woman.

8. My teacher was pretty disbelieving of the fact.
Me and my buddy who graded the test (it was one of those trade your paper, and the other person will grade it to keep you from cheating deals) had to really convince her that was the actual grade that was earned on the quiz.

She eventually believed us. We had innocent faces.

11. That's what I told her.
And since my buddy graded my test, I couldn't use "creating grading methods" to bump my score any.

I felt pretty much like this guy.:dunce:

7. I survived Stage IV ovarian cancer
The doctor told me I had a 10% chance of survival.
Our department head at work (a doctor) told my
boss I wasn't going to make it. But, here I am.
I told them that heaven didn't want me and the
devil was afraid I'd take over. :)

12. Me too
I would never have met Derby if I hadn't.
It wasn't easy, but I soldiered through the very
harsh chemo I had to get - big, big guns. It killed
my teeth and my nerves (giving me neuropathy), but
I'm still here.

21. Did you ever watch Thirtysomething back in the 80's?
There was a character named Nancy who had ovarian cancer. And there was this huge suspense has to whether or not she would survive. I remember someone commenting at the time that it would be realistic is she did not, because the odds were so slim. And I thought, well, that's exactly the point, if you have a TV show, and you create the outcome, dammit, portray the case that shows the percentage who survive, because we need stories like that to hold onto.

Stories like yours!!! Thank you for sharing it.

24. You're welcome!
Yes, I did watch that show. I had to tune out because it was too close to home.
Gilda Radner was fighting hers and the same time I was. I wrote her a letter, but
never heard back.

My cousin got OC too - her's was caught a little earlier than
mine, but not by much. She's doing fine too. She was able to testify before
Congress about it and the need for more research. The symptoms are so vague that
it could be anything. She and I compared notes, and she had the same non-specific
symptoms I did.

22. Aced a geometry exam in high school by randomly filling in bubbles.
I answered what questions I could. By the time I had finished legitimately answering questions, there was still 1/3 of the test remaining.

I randomly filled in bubbles. Got an A on the exam which pushed me from a D to a B for the class.

Phew.

:) I was extremely close to death. All I wanted to do was to go to sleep. The nurse in the emergency room MADE me walk around---she held me firmly by the arm and forced me to walk around the hallways. I had oxygen tubes in my nose and pushed the oxygen tank around as we walked. She saved my lfe. :)

But I was in high school before I realized my astounding feat of misguesstimation.

How did you do on your exam?

34. I convinced a donor to give $10million to one of my clients
based solely on our mutual love for the Rolling Stones.

I.shit.you.not.

We never discussed anything else during the meeting and as it was wrapping up, he said "what a minute, wasn't I supposed to agree to a contribution" or something to that effect. I mentioned the figure. He agreed. Shook my hand and walked out.

I wish I could get someone to give ME that kind of money based on our mutual love for the Rolling Stones.
