DAMMIT!!!!! I found out yesterday that I need BIFOCALS!!!!!
:yoiks: x( I hate wearing glasses, and I have a pair that I got a long time ago that I only wear to drive at night. I never needed them until I was almost 30, and even then, it was just to drive at night. Over the past year, though, I've had to fight to focus on computer stuff at work, and given the past month and a half, I'm surprised I didn't totally destroy my eyes. This job will be the death of me yet....:(

Yeah, I know...I'm getting progressive lenses, so there won't be any lines....but still....

P. S. I tried contacts a few years ago, and those were much more trouble than glasses. I gave up on that when the contacts made my eyes scream in pain one morning. :(

1. They may suck...
or they may not. I'm not sure. I got bifocals two years ago and I'm still adjusting to them, but I think that maybe my prescription wasn't right.

2. That's what I've heard.
They can either suck or be OK. My husband has trifocals and told me it took about three days to get used to them. However, a good friend of mine said she's never really gotten used to her bifocals. :(

3. It's really not so bad
I've needed bifocals since I was 8 years old. Try being the kid in 3rd grade with the lines on your glasses. :eyes:

I have contacts now and love them but I used to have the Progressive lenses and they were great. Took a little time to get used to them but once I did, I really liked them.

4. I have needed them for years
But I have not gotten them yet.

I buy super strong reading glasses for when I am knitting, or doing work that requires strong focus.

17. My husband has trifocals but still needs a very strong pair of reading
glasses for close work. He's an artist and also does a lot of miniature and model work, and he says the reading glasses work best for that.

I'm 35 and still use separate reading glasses. :D

Besides, it's dignified and a waste of money to have multiple pairs of eyeglasses. :7

9. Just got my first pair of bifocals about a month ago. I hate them
I hope you have better luck than I do with these things. The Dr. talked me into the progressives and there are still things I can't read or see well. Wish you could have seen me attempting to paint baseboard..I couldn't see with the glasses and couldn't see without. Thank goodness for painter's tape and my daughter.

11. I was supposed to get them.
But I refused and went for the less-expensive, single lens prescription. I see just fine. With a health care system based on predatory capitalism, if I can starve the beast, I will.

12. my eye doctor says he can tell a person's age by examining their eyes
I have the progressive bi-focals, and they're pretty easy to get used to.

A couple of things...

don't look down too quickly. It will seem like the floor is crawling and you'll get dizzy.

if you have a TV in your bedroom and it's near the foot of your bed, you may want to put it up high on a shelf rather than on a bureau. I find that if I sit back against my headboard and look toward my feet, I'm looking through the "close" part of my lenses, which of course, is not what I need to watch TV.

15. Have you checked into
getting your arms lengthened? (If your HMO covers it, of course!)

But seriesly, I tried progressives a couple years ago. Went back a week later and had 'em ground out - I couldn't deal. Now I just pull my glasses down to the tip of my nose to read the fine print, or use cheap drugstore reading glasses for extended tasks.

Hope you have better luck!

22. It took me a while to get used to the progressives.
For about a week, the oncoming cars bent as they drove toward me. Very creepy.

Now, they only bother me when I'm walking downstairs. I take them off for that, and for reading (there are some benefits to being near-sighted).

I'm so sorry, NWC.

I had to get bifocals last year. I didn't cry over gray hair, wrinkles, and some of the other assorted issues that come from being 46. I cried over the bifocals, though. I got the progressive lenses. So far, they're working out. Like you, I got the cutest we could (almost) afford, too. I went for the Kate Spade frames ;-).

31. I'm so sorry, New Wave.
I got bifocals three years ago and I still can't get used to them, so I just got some contacts and use reading glasses for close-up stuff. I found it extremely hard to work on the computer with my bifocals; they say you have to get "computer glasses". DUH Wish I had known that three years ago.

38. Welcome to the club
I found out I needed bifocals just when my medicaid was pulled and the current glasses went kaput, damn cheap frames.
I'm wearing 15 year old glasses now and I know that's not doing my eyes anygood, I've found that if I need to read or do any close up work it's best just to lay my glasses somewhere and go without aid.
It sucks because I once was a voracious reader, now I hate to even try.

41. I got my first pair of progressives this year
They are working out nicely. I must have needed them for some time, because reading is the easiest it has been in 3 or 4 years. So now I am devouring books again.

I love my progressives. They are not for everybody though. My Dad had no luck with them, but my Mom is fine with hers. I have the TV mounted fairly high (not to mention the way movie screens are set), and my work computer when I look "up" in my field of view. They come in handy at work when I am constantly referencing papers on my desk with what's on the screen.

It's not bad at all, and inevitable. :-)
