Hey! Is that a Hemi?
"You're about to find out!"

And then the McJob guy comes out of his day dream, hands a bag of McPlastic food to the happy rich guy in the thirty thousand bucks or so Dodge Hemi cool truck.

Commercial makes me think. Really; there is something wrong with that picture. I cannot quite put my finger on it.

2. As an avid hater of dodge commercials...
(I know. Hate is a strong word. That's why I'm using it.)

...that one is the funniest of the bunch. I especially like the cheerleaders.

But after dodge's arrogant commercial campaign, I'd rather push my volkswagen than drive one of their fucked up trucks.

24. Yes ZenLefty
Fine minds.

Hey, I was thinking about you and the monster creepy crawlers (hairy) there where you live as I wrote a Little totally ignored piece about caves and tunnels in Japan where the really, really giant man scaring centipedes live.

You still got those critters?

5. Yeah, I don't think rich-guy is all that rich
Seems pretty Average Joe to me.

And the kids, well, they seem like kids. Maybe when they grow up they'll get real jobs and be able to afford their dream truck. But not in bush's economy.

8. Hey! The Grumpy's own a Dodge with a Hemi and we are not
rich at all. It's my husband's work truck and we got it for waayyyy less than $30,000 on the employee program...even without the employee discount it would not have been $30,000. Please don't lump us in with snobbish happy rich people. We are backwoods, miserable, slightly higher than poor people...;)

12. a car importer has one on display here
The Specs are rather interesting (really, that's what the paper behind the front window says):
...
- mileage : Trust me... you don't want to know.

...
Pros: No problems finding a parking space - there are none for this car.

...

According to this article, the average sticker price of a new car now exceeds $30K. Ouch.

The average sticker for everybody is more like $22K. This doesn't even count the people who don't buy new.

19. It's a really big, really powerful, really loud engine. My husband
could explain all the excruciatingly boring details of it...but for me, this suffices. :hi:

20. It's a type of engine where the cylinder part, where the explosion
Edited on Wed Jan-28-04 02:06 PM by kmla
occurs is shaped in a hemispherical or "half-sphere" (thus hemi-shphere...). Looks like the lid of a "frozen Coke" that you can get at some 7-11 stores.

The typical engine cylinder is just that - a cylinder with a flat top, where the piston rides up and down. This is economical to pmanufacture, but in a pure physics and thermodynamic sense, it is not the most efficient way to extract the power from the internal explosion that makes your car run. In a hemispherical cylinder, the power is extracted during the explosion a little more efficiently, leading to more power from the same amount of gasoline.

This technology came to be in the 60's, during a revolution in design in stock cars. The hemi engine was so successful that it wound up being banned from stock car racing, because others could not compete. Same way with the turbine engine in Indy car/open wheel racing.

Did I confuse ya?

On edit - the ad campaign does what they hired it to do - we all know EXACTLY who makes the hemi (whether or not you love it or hate it - they want you to remember it). Egg-zackly what an ad company is hired for...

21. Let me try...
OK...in most cars, pistons reside in cylinders that are, well, cylindrical. In a hemi, the top end of the cylinder has a hemispherical (domed) top. This allows for a larger area for combustion to occur, hence making more power.

Clear like mud? :D

And am I right, that only Chrysler made the hemi ?

Oh, and I actually owned one, a 392 in a 56 Chrysler if I remember right

Pics are not mine, just "found" them laying around in cyberspace --

392 hemi

Man . .

wasn't it nice when you could tell what kind of car it was by just LOOKING at it ?

26. NASCAR banned it...
because Richard Petty won 27 races (of 48 starts--they ran a lot more races then) in 1967 with a hemi engine in his car.
