Yesterday, I was shortchanged a dollar for the second time at the local hardware store by the same clerk. I think it was deliberate. Should I tell the Store Manager first or the Police?
That would solve the O.P.'s problem but it won't stop the clerk from stealing other peoples money. I don't think it is the fact a dollar is lost but the fact that the clerk is doing it.
My point is a dollar is probably not going to put you in the poor house. The thought of someone stealing from you is probably the main motivation for your complaining to the manager. I once spent 10 minutes retrieving a 50 cent overcharge from a store. It wasn't the money but the fact they had a sign that was quoting a lower price than the product rang up as.
that someone would jeopardize their job for a dollar. My guess is that it was an honest mistake. She may be just too nervous to count correctly. Give the clerk the benefit of the doubt, but do bring the issue up to management.
It might not be deliberate, but if the clerk has a hard time counting to 3 or 4 in her capacity as a clerk, it might not be the best job for her or perhaps a reprimand will make her more conscientious.
