Someone tell me this is just totally wrong and I should do it
I have about a month left in my apartment until I move. I'm paying for Verizon DSL but I haven't used it in a few weeks because I'm picking up someone elses wireless network. Mind you I live in an apartment building so this probably isn't uncommon. I'm not doing anything risky (other than calling people who don't show receipts dickheads) but honestly I feel like cancelling verizon and saving a month or 2 on their bill.

I mean is it my fault this person (whoever has the wireless network) isn't securing the line. Oh - and I have 2 networks to choose from.

4. Sorry, I can't help you
"Is it my fault the guy left his Mercedes in his driveway with the keys in it while he ran in the house to grab his briefcase?" is not really a good excuse for stealing a car and I just can't see "isn't securing the line" as justification for stealing wireless service.

8. Except if you steal his car you deprive him totally of its use
while you have it.

So that comparison is a no-go.

Seriesly, stealing is wrong, mkay?

For the record though, I secure my network so freaks don't suck up my bandwith and/or download kiddie porn.

7. We have badges for SXSW
I still owe my friend money but she knows I'm buying a house and I'm paying her back later.

We've got a room at the Holiday Inn at Town Lake (she has a shitload of Holiday Inn points).

You must come. And if my friend's band gets accepted I'll make sure you get in even if you don't have a badge and/or a receipt.

13. Sweet!
I plan on taking some time off around then. I may not get a wristband, but just do all the free parties instead.

Oh, and that's the Holiday Inn at Lady Bird Lake now. :)

What's the chance of Robert Plant being the keynote again?

Actually - I wouldn't mind if you took us to some of those free parties like that BBQ place out in the boonies. I was telling my friend of how you knew about the great out-of-the-way places.

11. I think it's totally fine to ride on unsecured networks
You really aren't stealing - unless you're hogging shitloads of bandwidth, the person won't even notice.

And there are many of us geeky types who believe strongly that bandwidth should be free, and who WILLINGLY share our networks for whoever who wants to ride them.

It's very possible that your person is offering his bandwidth freely. If he/she didn't want to, he/she would secure the network.

"Stealing" wireless access is as ridiculous as the thought that you can "steal" people's air by breathing more heavily than normal.

:eyes:

Don't worry about it.
