Thinking of starting a detox diet this weekend.
Has anyone done this before? I quit drinking so I figure now would be a good time to start one of these (get all the nasty alcohol toxins out).

Thoughts?

1. There's no such thing
Alcohol is processed by the liver (hence cihhrosis) then flushed through the kidneys to the bladder. No special diet is going to make it any after. They're all scams.

Wanna buy some snake oil?

3. Not any particular one. I guess "diet" is a misnomer.
Just loading up on fruits, veggies, grains, water. Nothing processed, no sugar....

But would snake oil make my hair shiny? ;)

2. This month's Shape had an article about detox diets and how bad they are for you.
Edited on Thu Sep-06-07 02:32 PM by grace0418
They can actually slow your metabolism way down and make it *harder* for you to flush out toxins and harder to lose weight (if that's what you want). Drink lots of water, eat lots of healthy food, get lots of exercise, get a good night's sleep. No other diet works better. I've been doing just that for over a year now and I'm 2/3 of the way to my goal.

*Eta: Congratulations on stopping drinking, if you were feeling like it was an unhealthy path for you. That alone is a positive step.

4. Not in it to lose weight.
Just sick of feeling icky and tired all the time. So-no sugar (not that I ate sweets-I have a salt tooth), no caffeine, lots of fruit, veg, whole grain. My cousin is studying to get some kind clinical nutrition license and she swears by the detoxing powers of fresh fruit and vegetables.

5. Even if you don't want to lose weight, you will detox by doing what you're doing.
Edited on Thu Sep-06-07 02:53 PM by grace0418
As long as you're eating fruits, veggies, complex carbs and lean protein, drinking lots of water and getting exercise and rest, your body will detox just fine. I bet you'll feel better very soon.

The detox diets that are dangerous and counterproductive are the ones that have you eating nothing but a grapfruit smoothie for two weeks. Stuff like that. But what you're doing is more of a lifestyle change, and that's a good thing.

Oh, and if you do have a "salt tooth" :) drink even more water. Too much salt can lead to hypertension even in fit individuals.

Good luck! :hi:

6. There was a DUer who did the master cleanser last Spring
Was it Underpants?

My softball manager and one of my teammates has done it. Involves lemon juice, honey and cayen (sp)
pepper.

10. I've done that one, too.... many times.
it's not for everyone, but I love the way it makes my body feel. I try to do a cleanse twice a year, in the spring and in the fall. I'm coming up on the time for another one...

:hi:

7. Quit drinking? Horrors.
;)

Of course, I have to give up beer due to some dietary restrictions I'm on for my kidney stone episode a couple of months ago. x(

9. I think underpants did this.
I have a few friends that have done The Cleanse, and they loved it.
