White Mountains on Labor Day (Picture Heavy Thread)
As promised, here are some pictures from my Labor Day trip to the White Mountains...

Head for the Hills! Only the properly equipped will survive!
Ok, maybe that one isn't from the White Mountains, and that's not me holding the hair dryer...

At the trail head; the journey beings:

Mount Galehead as seen from the Galehead Hut:
This after a five hour hike from the trail head.

Galehead AMC Hut:
The wind power generator atop the building screams like a banshee day and night...

Yes, by federal law they are required to have a wheel chair access ramp in this remote wilderness facility. There is no wheel chair accessible trail to this hut.

View from the South Twin Summit:
There's a 360 degree view of the White Mountains from this vantage point. Mount Lafayette is in the background.

Mount Lafayette view from South Twin (Mount Garfield on the right):

Mount Washington view from South Twin:
You can see some of the smoke from the cog rail going up the mountain.

View from Mount Bond:

View of Mount Garfield from Galehead at Sunset:
This was one spectacular sunset!

Zeeland Hut:
Getting ready for the final descent to Crawfield headquarters and civilization.

6. Thank you!
It was one beautiful trip.

I wish I could have photographed the sky at night; there were so many stars!

The scorpio constellation was spectacular. It covered a quarter of the horizon.

2. Ooh, you're making me jealous
A friend of mine has written many hiking guides for the White Mountains -- she's a pro. Check them out: www.ruthdoanmacdougall.com

New Hampshire. I love it there.

11. One more picture - Mount monadnock (Not White Mountains)
Edited on Wed Sep-05-07 08:42 PM by Xipe Totec
It belongs in the collection because it was the qualifying test before heading for the Whites.

This is a view from the summit of Mount Monadnock

22. Ecclesiastes XII (If you're wondering what I was thinking)
Edited on Thu Sep-06-07 10:36 PM by Xipe Totec
12:1 Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;

12:2 While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain:

12:3 In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be darkened,

12:4 And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of music shall be brought low;

12:5 Also they shall be afraid of high, and fears in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets:

12:6 Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern.

12: 7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

12. Galehead is my favorite hut location.
Last time I was there it was the old hut (no wheelchair ramp and a bit smaller as I recall.) From that col it's easy to pretend that you're far from everyone else.

When you posted the peaks in the other thread I wondered if you had done a Zealand-Galehead hut to hut trek. Looks like you did, but in the other direction.

I miss the Whites. Thanks for posting these wonderful photos.

15. Galehead is the most remote hut in the White Mountains
Yes, I did go in the other direction; Ghoul to Zuul. :hi:

17. I recommend Madison hut for your next trip.
Gorgeous hike up and great trails over towards Washington. I was there in June one year and the ice under the hut hadn't melted yet, never mind the snowfields on the ravine trail.

13. awww lucky!
I can't wait to get back up there, maybe in a few weeks - my last trip ended abruptly in Franconia notch when my belt tensioner blew and I had to cut my trip short.

18. My husband and I were looking at Mt. Washington from the boat
on Monday. It was such a spectacular day! We were out on Moose Pond in Bridgton, ME. We know it is a great day when we can see the puffs of smoke from the cog railway from the lake! And I was saying that it would be a great day to be up on the mountain. Lucky you!

20. The weather forecast for Labor Day Monday was
100 miles visibility. Your observation of the cog rail smoke plumes confirms that they were not exaggerating!

26. The closest I get to that is driving up Mt. Washington...
I once had a bumper sticker that said "This car fell off Mt. Washington". (Old, beat-up car).
