"Now let's talk about the iPod. It's doing really well. They're... rather strong." Teehee. "We've sold over 110m to date... and you'll notice the place where the sales curve is strongest is during the holiday season... today we're going to refresh or replace EVERY single product in this lineup to get ready for this holiday season."

"We're going to offer a slightly thicker one as well... and it's going to have 160GB." applause. "This BOGGLES the mind! This new 160GB, which is far smaller than the original iPod, puts 40k songs in your pocket. Even better: battery life. 40 hours audio, 7 hours video.""

iPod Touch = iPhone without the phone feature. Same size screen as the iPhone, but it's even thinner, Cover Flow, multi-touch interface, built in WiFi, web browser, YouTube, 22 hours audio, 5 hours video playback, 8GB = $299 or 16GB of storage = $399.

New itunes WiFi music store!

$200 price drop on 8 GB iPhone!

3. Are the old ones going to be cheaper?
As long as stores have the old ones in the inventory they may want to get rid of them. I personally do not care that it is the latest model but I'd buy the old one if I could save $50.

25. I am reluctant to spend so much money on something that may not last very long
I bought an Iriver and it crapped out after less than 2 years. Whatever I buy next has to last much longer. I do not want to spend 250 on something that won't last.

37. Yeah, and I just broke down and finally bought my first iPod less than 2 months ago--
Edited on Thu Sep-06-07 08:59 AM by fifthgendem
how do you think I feel?

ARRRGGGGHHH!!!!

I thought I was getting a great deal by getting the 80GB player, but of course, if I'd just WAITED a little longer, I could have had so, so much more . . . .

Sigh . . . . :banghead:

I'd actually like a smaller one--the 80GB is great but it's hard to use when you have almost 5,000 songs on it. It's difficult to scroll through all those to find what you want to listen to. So maybe I'll break down at some point and get the 8GB in the red I've been drooling over for ages and keep the larger one at home as my music library.

Such is the life of a techno-geek . . . .

9. Doesn't It Make You Sad That The IPod Is Apple's Best Selling Product Ever
The Ipod has only been around for a couple of years or so, whereas the Macs have been around for going on nearly 30 years.

My point is that more and more computer products are geared towards entertainment rather than actual computing.

We are entertaining ourselves into oblivion.

14. Or maybe we are thinking of
new ways and new areas in which to do computing. The first thing the usually gets going in technology is entertainment. Practical uses come later when people have a chance to see that the thing they love to play on most could be productive for work too.

18. Plus the iPod is creating many more potential Mac buyers
People who got drawn into Apple by the iPod will likely now at least consider buying a Mac whereas before they would have just blindly bought another PC.

20. 2007-1984 is rather less than 30 years. But I agree,
especially when an ipod, zune, or anything else doesn't even include basic PDA functionality (alarm reminders, et al).

Maybe we should entertain ourselves while we can?

19. I do
almost exactly 160GB right now which is about 450 CDs in CD quality lossless format. None of that crappy mp3 sound for me.

So I definitely want the iPod Classic. I'll pass on the touch model until they can get the capacity up higher.

41. Yes, its the M$ one that's sinking fast in the marketplace.
These mockups are presumably someone's idea of an ad campaign targeted at the Zune. They must be fairly old, because the Zune isn't really a force in the marketplace, and certainly not one Apple would specifically target.

The mockups aren't representative of the final product either. I don't know who made them, presumably some hypercaffeinated bod at Engadget or Gizmodo.

I bought one in April and now this.

Maybe I can get someone to buy my Ipod which is in great condition so I can splurge on this. Ugh, I survived not getting an iPhone, but this may be a bit too much.

edit: a used Ipod sounds like an amazing xmas gift to my older sister right about now :P

Actually, four of the six people in my house have iPods. None of us have ever had any problems. Apple has sold 110 million iPods. Obviously some of them are going to be fucked up. It sucks that you got one of them but can we say, "Xbox 360?"

If they did support OGG all of my music would be in OGG too. I have done a good job of staying away from AAC and sticking with mp3.

Have you tried restoring the software from within iTunes yet? Maybe that could help with whatever problems you are having. Do you use iTunes to manage things? Have we had this conversation before? It feels familiar.

35. Yeah, it actually forces me to do that when it erases itself. I do indeed use iTunes.
It did it again a couple days ago. So goddamn frustrating. It would be less frustrating with OGG support because if I own a CD, it's on my computer in OGG, which means I have to re-rip it in MP3 just to load it back onto the iPod.

supporting slave labor In China.

iPod maker admits breaking Chinese labor laws; says Apple approved sweatshop labor
http://macdailynews.com/index.php/weblog/comments/9988

"Apple Computer is getting into a deep PR mess over the antics of one of its Chinese partners," Nick Farrell reports for The Inquirer.

"After denying that it was running a sweatshop that would be familiar to Charles Dickens, Apple's Ipod manufacturer, Foxconn has finally admitted that it broken Chinese labour laws," Farrell reports.

40. Those photos are unofficial mockups. The real iPods don't look like that.
Edited on Thu Sep-06-07 02:09 PM by Kutjara
Only the iPodtouch has a full-sized screen, and it doesn't use the scrollwheel interface. Instead it uses either the "Coverflow" interface or a more traditional list of names, scrollable by flicking the finger down the touchscreen.

The nano and classic iPods are configured much like the outgoing model, except the classic is now all metal, the screens are better, and some small tweaks have been made to the interface. The nano is now square and squat instead of long and thin.

For real photos, see: www.apple.com
