Will an iPod Shuffle set off the airport metal detector?
My girlfriend just bought me a brand new iPod Shuffle to replace my old Shuffle that quit holding a charge, the old Shuffle was almost entirely plastic - the new one appears to be almost entirely metal.

Unfortunately with the amount that has been stolen from me by George Bushes airport gestapo over the last few years (and I don't mean my Dr. Pepper or razor) the last thing I am going to do is put my iPod Shuffle in the tub that would be so easily pocketed (it's smaller than a matchbook) - which is required under the current rules Kip Hawley shit out a few weeks ago.

1. Mine has set one off...
I don't really see someone swiping it from the little bucket. You watch it go in and watch it go out. At least at every airport I have ever been to. My wallet has metal on it and it has to go through the machine. And I have never had a problem. And if you are really concerned put it inside a change purse that has a metal clasp. That should be big enough to prevent theft.

2. Put it in your carry-on
and send it through the x-ray machine.

3. current rules require all electronics be in the tub,
and most of the stuff was pocketed during the hand screening of my carry-on,

7. it was screamed at me repeatedly for 25 minutes at the Phoenix airport last week
This bad ethnic stereotype was walking up and down the line screaming that all electronics had to be in the tray,

18. Yeah, I'm pretty sure I left my phone in my carry-on rather than putting it in the tub.
That was last winter, though. I haven't flown since Christmas.

5. I've never had any problems with putting my small electronics in my carryon.
I fly a LOT, always with iPod (now iPhone) and camera, and noise canceling headphones and other gizmos, and they are always IN my carry on and I have never had a problem with it.

11. Same here. Ipod, cell phone, Palm Pilot, projector, all sorts of
cables and gizmos, and I've never had to take them out of the carry-on. Just the laptop.

And I've flown through Phoenix, but not in the last couple months.

I fly a LOT, and I've never had anything stolen. The TSA aren't always the brightest bulbs, but they hardly seem gestapo to me.

6. I put my phone, camera, wallet, keys and other valuables...
...in my carry-on and send them through the X-ray machine. Only my laptop has to go through on its own.

8. I flew last month
and the rule about having all electronics out was in place. I specifically asked the security guy if I needed to pull out my ipod and he said no. I put it in my sweater pocket and sent it through the x-ray.

Don't pack it; put it in your jacket pocket and send it through that way.

Good luck!

12. Which airport?
Because I flew last week and all my gadgets were in my carry-on (except my laptop), and no problems.

16. SeaTac and Logan.

Also LAX and Charlotte.

Security people instructed flyers to take anything larger than a camera out of the carryons. I asked about the ipod because it was pretty much the only gadgetry I had on me.

edit: I only suggested that the OP shouldn't pack his ipod because he was afraid it might get stolen from the carryon, not because of any rules.

15. No, they don't.
I travel very frequently for business, and that is not a rule.

10. "Forget" to take it out of your 5th jean pocket
If they catch it, shove it in your bin in your shoes or something.

13. Try leaving it in your carry-on
I flew numerous times this summer, including overseas and to various US airports, and I always had a full-sized video iPod in my carry-on. It NEVER set anything off, and nobody ever asked me to take it out.

Worst case scenario, they stop you and ask you to take it out, then re-screen you.
