What is the very best compliment you've ever received?
I'm thinking of a couple... but it's hard to decide which is the best one.

Does anything, specific, stand out in your mind...

as the very best compliment anybody has ever

given you?

1. I'll have to think about it
Out of work, I don't remember a lot of compliments because I tend to write them off as excessive flattery.

From work, a few years back, not long before I had left a job, the guy that was the Controller of the company said something I worked on was the best product he'd seen since he'd come to the company 2 1/2 years earlier. So, I was pretty happy about that.

2. Thanks
A lot of the ones I remembered were work related, too. A compliment seems to mean more from a customer, for some reason (for me). I never know whether or not my supervisor's compliments are intended to just motivate me. One of my favorite ones was when a customer called me a "Fucking angel." It was more the way she said it-- with such enthusiasm. lol

9. well, I remember a few
from outside of work. I've had several women tell me I looked like Richard Gere, which I assumed was a compliment. I never saw what women liked about him, though.

I've gotten a few compliments on my green eyes.

I've had a few gay men make passes at me, and one even tried to slip me his phone number.

after we got divorced, my ex-wife gave me an indirect compliment after being very stingy with them before & during our marriage. About a year after the divorce was official, she had mentioned that her new boyfriend was not as good at giving massages as I was. So, I took that to be a compliment.

I think we all need to give more compliments... there is just not enough of that in the world.

One of my younger sisters has green/hazel eyes. Her eyes actually seem to change colors depending on what color of clothes she wears!

11. Someone once told me I was like a shark.
By that he meant, I was like a species perfectly adapted to its environment, completely apart from the human world, and unchanged for millions of years; a being that goes about its business by its own laws and rules, acts in a way that makes sense to its own needs and schedules, a predator without malice, a survivor. A creature feared, hated, and misunderstood by the human world, who actually doesn't give a damn what the human world thinks of it. (The corollary to this, of course, is that if dragged out of its element, the shark is in great danger.)

He meant it neither as a compliment nor an insult, merely as an observation. I've taken and valued it as a compliment for all these years, though.

18. being told I'm "the best mommie EVER" -
by all three of my kids. Ok they were too young to know any different, but still - brings tears to my eyes. Still does when they say it now - even though they're probably just angling for something. Having others comment that they think I'm a good mom.

Being told I was a "pitbull" when it came to tracking down information - or righting wrongs.

Being told I could argue the ears off of a stalk of corn by my debate coach. lol...

Having the highschool choral director literally fall off his chair when I auditioned for the school play.

Being told I had an excellent accent by native speakers (in whatever language I was attempting - even if I didn't actually understand/speak the language - just phrases here and there.)

Having a published author tell me my paper (with a little editing) should be submitted for a shortstory - which I never did - though I still think about it sometimes.

(hmmm - this post is making me sad now. Most of it long long ago. All of that unrealized - never to be realized "potential". :( )

I was carded at a bar, but wasn't that happy about it because the tone seemed rather accusatory. The bartender apologized when she actually looked at my id.
It was a bit of a compliment though when one of our younger friends saw our engagment picture that was taken at age 21 and remarked that we looked like we hadn't aged at all.

30. I've told this story before but it is the best - to me, anyway
My best friend is a New England farmer and as such, he doesn't waste a lot of words. And almost never uses them for empty compliments. He shows how he feels in what he does.

Anyway, I was helping him with the haying one day and my job was to stack the hay on the big ol' farm truck. There's an art to stacking hay in such a way that you can get the most possible bales on the truck without needing a rope to hold them there.

I loaded that truck to the sky and was just putting the last few bales on when he walked up (he'd been running the baler). He looked way up to where I was working for a long few minutes and then said,

"You've stacked hay before."

From a man like that, it was worth a million bucks. :)

32. I think they are - they're personal and mean a lot
My other best compliment came from my dad. I was 15 and we had agreed to take a horse sight unseen because we'd looked at him the previous summer and knew he was a good one. Unfortunately, in the year that had passed, he'd changed owners and the new people were idiots who misused and abused him.

The plan was that I was going to ride him home, alone, cross country, about 20 miles. We got there and found this spooky, jumpy horse who was almost impossible to catch or saddle. The four or five guys there told my dad that he had thrown all of them more than once, that he was mean, cantankerous, and dangerous.

One of them said, "You're not going to let that little girl ride that wild beast all that way alone, are you?"

And my dad said calmly, "Of course. She can do it."

And I did. :)

My dad always had the utmost confidence in me.

34. A couple ...

There are some that I remember thinking "Wow!" about at the time, but since I'm not real good about accepting compliments (need to work on that!) I don't absorb them and can't remember what they were now.

Two big ones I remember because they've come up more than once ... the :wtf: one is that I've been told by more than one man (both platonic friends and men I dated) that they never thought seriously about having kids until they'd met me because until then they'd never met anyone they'd want as a mother to their children. The other one I've heard from a number of my friends, that they've never met another person that listens as well or is as understanding as I am.

Interesting, to say the least.

was about 25 years old he told me what incredible parents his Dad and I were. He'd met enough people and their families to see how so many of them were completely dysfunctional. He told us we were amazing and thanked us.

I thought it was quite a compliment coming from the guy who had to argue and make an issue about every damn thing when he was a teenager and on into his early 20s. He was a real pain in the ass at times and made me cry on more than one occasion.

It's nice to know that even though we had been accused of fucking up his life, we really hadn't fucked up his life.

46. Here's a couple
My wife is a retired paramedic. We went to visit a couple of her old partners who were still working. We had a plesant time and meal, when one of them mentioned that they were having problems with their computers that they used for admin work and for general surfing. I volunteered to take a look at them. I spent an hour hacking the registry, cleaning up the system, installing updates and getting the other computers to connect wirelessly. When I was done, all 6 computers were running fast, could connect to a shared Internet connection, and everyone in the station was more than thrilled. The senior paramedic, after testing everything, called me "a freaking brain surgeon". I thanked him, but it wasn't until the trip home, that my wife told me this is the highest compliment a paramedic could bestow on anyone.

Another time, a friend of a friend asked me for help in securing his home network, because of the nature of his work and the information on the system in his home office. We spent a couple of hours talking about what he needed, how it needed to share an internet connection, but be isolated from his home network, and so on. I spent most of the day, configuring his system and the ones in his household to his specifications. A week later, auditors from the state came in, surveyed his office and computer and pronounced it fully HIPPA compliant, the first one for a home office in his specialty, childhood behaivoral therapy. He sent me a card and letter in both English and French, thanking me, and pronouncing me "a genius".

55. The one I always think of:
A few young reporters have told me I taught them a lot. That meant a lot to me because there's a teacher inside me trying to get out. If I made a significant change to a story, I'd tell 'em why I did it.

I learned a lot from them, too — and not just about journalism.

Oh — once, a dental hygienist said to me, "You've got nice nails — for a guy." :D

Edited on Sun Aug-26-07 05:01 PM by LibDemAlways
at a function at my daughter's elementary school. The grandmother of one of her friends told me I had a very nice complexion.

More recently I got what I consider sort of a backhanded compliment from another of my daughter's friends. He told my daughter I'm over-protective. He probably considered it an insult, but I don't. When it comes to my daughter, there's no such thing as "too protective."

64. I taught years ago, and vividly recall the few
notes of thanks I received. I now have a 14-year-old of my own and have made it a point to thank her teachers, especially the ones who are unpopular and get a lot of grief. Last year my daughter had a math teacher who was new to the school and whom everyone seemed to hate. I actually thought that despite her rather stern manner, she really knew her stuff and did a great job getting the information across. I wrote several notes letting her know how much I appreciated the job she was doing, and I could tell by her feedback that mine were probably the only words of encouragement she had received. So, I couldn't agree more. Teaching is an often thankless job, and teachers really do appreciate a kind word.

59. One time a couple asked my wife and me if anything ever
happened to them, would we would take their children and raise them with our own children. When we agreed to,they put it in their will so in-laws couldn't take over..they weren't relatives or anything like that, just good friends. They said they worried what would happen to their kids if they were in a wreck or something and they were both suddenly gone (orphanages etc.).
I took that as a pretty big compliment.

61. Someone told me I helped change her life.
Years ago she came into the bookstore where I work. She was so down & told me that her husband was treating her horribly. She was a lovely woman; active in the community, much admired. After hearing her story I put a copy of a book on domestic violence in her hand. I told her it helped me change my life.
A while after this, she divorced her husband & moved away. Earlier this summer she stopped by to say hello. It was then she told me that because of that day she was able to take action. She introduced me to her new husband, who she said is the love of her life.
It knocked me out. You never know when one moment's kindness will impact someone in such a wonderful way. I will cherish this memory always.

62. This is one of the best, even-keeled threads I've read
Terrific choice of topic and your staying with the thread and responding made it work.

Perhaps the best compliment I ever received was from my wife. Many years ago my successful career came crashing down and almost took my marriage with it. I started over in a new career and have again been successful, but in a more balanced way. My wife often tells me how much she admires how I picked myself off the floor and overcame my own created misfortunes. I could not have done it alone and needed her all along the way.

66. "You're tenacious."
by a fellow student after I managed to get back from him something he stole from me that was, in all likelihood, worth less than a dollar. But it was the principle of the matter, and after several months, the day ended with several of my fingers bleeding, his elbow bleeding, and me, after being dragged down several hallways with a deathgrip on his backpack, with my property rightfully restored. :woohoo:

68. My favorates are the unintentional ones
like when I put a link to an mp3 of something I'd played while just improving on my livejournal, and a friend asked what song it was. He didn't know it was just me improving, he thought it was written by some 'real' composer. :)

I'm not very comfortable with water colors and am usually unpleased with my work....but Sniffa saw this nude I did and said, keep in mind he knew the model, "You made something very ugly, something beautiful."
