Atlanta to ban baggy pants
Atlanta considers banning baggy pants
1 hour, 50 minutes ago

Baggy pants that show boxer shorts or thongs would be illegal under a proposed amendment to Atlanta's indecency laws.

The amendment, sponsored by city councilman C.T. Martin, states that sagging pants are an "epidemic" that is becoming a "major concern" around the country.

"Little children see it and want to adopt it, thinking it's the in thing," Martin said Wednesday. "I don't want young people thinking that half-dressing is the way to go. I want them to think about their future."

Yeah, makes sense to me, I get tired of seeing some dude's polka-dotted boxers...

The proposed ordinance would also bar women from showing the strap of a thong beneath their pants. They would also be prohibited from wearing jogging bras in public.

NOW THAT'S GOING TOO FAR!!!

:P

1. I'm so glad I come from a place with some common sense
My home town has been wrestling with the unfortunate need to put something on the books but the only reason they've been forced into it is that publicity has made it seem like the town is a haven for nudists.

My home town has no laws against public nudity.

Which doesn't mean that people parade around naked all the time but it does mean if you want to sunbathe nude, or go skinny dipping, or sit out on your porch with no clothes on, you can.

Last year, some maroon made a fuss because a few downtown dwellers who lived in hot apartments were hanging out nude in the local parking lot. Which was no big deal to 99% of the residents. Publicity ensued, people travelled from all over the frigging country to display their naked bodies in my poor little town so now they've been forced to pass an ordinance.

It only bans nudity on public property in a narrow downtown area. Does not include breastfeeding mothers nor does it include people's personal outdoor property.

2. America is so funny about nudity
In Europe they aren't nearly as titillated as we are.

We glorify violence, and fear sex and nudity. Europe is just the reverse.

I don't think the above ordinance will really get passed, BTW. It's just another Bible-thumper trying to impose his warped views on the general public.

3. What's wrong with jogging bras?
Edited on Thu Aug-23-07 11:46 AM by supernova
I don't consider them to be any worse than a bathing suit top. Plus jogging/sports bras cover up a lot more than a bathing suit.

edit: I think the ordinance is silly. The only time it can be a huge distraction is in school and most schools have dress codes about what is appropriate/inappropriate dress.

17. A few years ago, the mothers of the poor boys on the football
team complained because the girls' soccer team wearing sports bras to practice because the poor lads became distracted. No mention of the fact that the boys got monopoly use on the campus practice field while the girls had to jog six blocks to an auxiliary field!

6. everyone has a right to look stupid
another frivolous and unenforceable law. Of course if someone was wearing the ultra sagging baggies they'd trip over themselves if they'd try to run from police so it's an advantage for them to not make it a law.

7. Lots of DUers that like to complain that "the big State will want to take care of us"
are conspicuously absent from this thread.

I guess the "take care of" is OK when it's of a puritan/RW variety.

8. Heck the edges of my "jogging bra" show
Edited on Thu Aug-23-07 12:12 PM by FloridaJudy
At my neck-line, and I'm usually as covered up as a devout Moslem (it's whatcha do when you burn just walking by a tanning parlor). A lot of jogging bras are far more modest than the skimpy tube and tank tops I see on the street.

As to the hanging down pants and the showy boxers, well I think they look silly (and mildly hazardous - I mean what if one of these guys had to run? He'd likely trip on his cuffs and do himself an injury). But I don't think they look any sillier than some of the weird stuff I wore when I was a teen-ager (skimpy patent-leather skirts with oversized sweaters? What was I thinking!).

Ignore the fads. They'll pass unless you make them more titillating by forbidding them.

13. "Epidemic". I'm glad things like baggy pants and the Black Death can be described
by the same word.
