I, too, need some of the powerful DU mojo vibes...
for my son. He broke his neck at the c6-c7 level this saturday body surfing in NC. He was transported to Duke Med Center and the miracle is a) he's not paralyzed, b) he's not dead.
We flew from OK to NC Saturday and just got home. He was discharged Monday night, no surgery needed.

Every physician that came in to see him started by saying, "You're lucky to be alive." That is true.

The down side is he is not going to be able to start his master's program at NC State for a year because of this. He will be in halo brace for 10 weeks. Oh yes, he's also uninsured, was planning to live off student loans. Hmmmm. Somewhat of a prob there too.

I can attest to his yellow dog democrat roots and vouch for his worthiness for these powerful positive thoughts. He's in Raleigh if that helps your aim.

12. 10 weeks in a halo brace. That's the good news.
Hopefully clinic in the AM goes well and the docs will still see no need for surgery.

18. Sending healing light and good vibes.
He will probably be told that he has to curtail some of his activities, even after he's well. I know someone who was in a halo as well and he had to quit downhill skiing due to the risk of another injury. I hope your son recognizes how lucky he is even though it may not seem that way to him right now.

22. It is an issue we haven't brought up...
A collegiate runner, ultimate frisbee league commissioner, swimmer, ex surfer now, skier. Going to be a little bit of a downer there. But it beats an electric wheelchair and now movement.

23. He is a very fortunate young man, thank goodness.
Sending vibes to him now, that his recovery process go well, AND that he not be buried under debt to the point where it interferes with that healing.

He might want to check into SSDI, see if he qualifies for that. Wouldn't be tons of money, but it could help.

26. He's lucky.
There are some family resources that can come into play, he has a wealthy grandmother and I'm her guardian and trustee. But we will have him go in to the financial office and discuss this, retail is too much for him to be responsible for. He has negative net worth, living off financial aid. He could declare bankruptcy as an option. If he pays $25 a month, they will never get all their money. Some lesser amount, once we see the bill, might be doable. The upside is, only 2 days in neuro step down, 1 CT, no MRI (because he had so little nerve involvement, no impairment), no surgery, and the halo is the only expensive toy they used. The rest is people time, a sunk cost. The nurses had to be paid whether he was there or not. It will be interesting. I will post in a few weeks how that works out.

No ssi, we had that discussion with the med=assist folks. No medicaid. He is the most intelligent and personable of the uninsured: A graduate student. He was going to buy student insurance, but hadnt', but it wouldn't have mattered because it would not have been effective until today, the first day of classes.

35. Wow, that is a miracle...
I had a patient once long ago, who broke his neck at the same level body surfing...

He was paralyzed, and did ultimately die...

You will survive this...

Good vibes to you both!

And good luck with the financial stuff...

Keep focusing on the fact that he is alive and not paralyzed...

Lucky doesn't even begin to describe his situation...
