Expected temp tomorrow in Dallas: 105.

The heat has forced the Arlington school district to shut down 35 playgrounds at 20 schools as mulch surrounding play structures may spontaneously combust, said Veronica Sopher, a district spokeswoman.

The school district became aware of the potential problem on Thursday when a play structure at Anderson Elementary School caught fire and melted, she said. Arson investigators determined with the help of security camera footage that the mulch had spontaneously combusted.

The affected playgrounds at Arlington schools will be closed during the next two weeks as crews dig up the mulch and replace it with gravel, she said.

5. Thank goodness for the security camera
Cuz without it, they probably would have written it off as arson and just left the mulch in place. I'm surprised I haven't seen any overheated cars on the side of the road during my late afternoon commute when the temp here is at it's highest.
"Cool front" comes thru this weekend....mid to low 90's supposedly!

3. we just
just put the red recycled tire stuff around a tree outside because the birds were making a mess with their food that I wanted to neaten up. I didn't realize it was tires until I dumped it out, so now I feel like I made some bio-hazard :( It's neat looking though, until it blows up or poisons everything in the ground.

is some kid burned herself very badly playing in it, but I am not sure there is a present ecological danger involved.

7. Seriously, I had sunlight magnified by a beer bottle ignite the foam insulation in my apt once...
By some odd coincidence I went home from work early that day and caught it before it spread.

8. Yikes.
That's pretty bad. What bothers me most about late summer is that the heat, humidity and dead plant life all combine to create foul odors everywhere. (Makes me think twice about a tropical "paradise").
