So I had a heart attack
Actually, a few. The last week of July, I thought it was the heat and humidity. I live a very healthy life. No red meat, quit smoking, had a stress test with sonogram last August. I even just recently had a Lifeline screening!

(For those of you who want peace of mind regarding the potential for a stroke, peripheral artery disease, abdominal aneurysm, and bone density, for $129, it can't be beat. I passed with flying colors).

I thought I was bullet proof. Luckily, I had JUST been accepted into the health care plan we have at work Finally, health insurance after 5 years. But Then the pressure on my chest and the difficulty breathing started again on August 1. It was like I had a sandbag on my chest and I just couldn't catch my breath. The previous week, it went away after sitting down for a bit. This time it didn't. After resting for about an hour, I got up to go to the main building where I work, and bang, it hit hard. I couldn't walk another step. I asked one of our managers to take me to the hospital because I stubbornly thought it was the heat. he said, no I was white, and 911 was already called.

They took me to the closest hospital (St Clair's) where I sat in emergency for 6 and a half hours, waiting for the cardiologist and my doctor (who is on the board of the hospital) to show up. Did I mention it as Wednesday? I continued to have small attacks and I was reassured as soon as my blood teat came back, they'd know what to do. What they were looking for were the enzymes your heart throws during a heart attack. In spite of an absurdly low blood pressure of 114 over 65, the small attacks continued. FINALLY at 6:30 that night, the cardiologist and my doctor show up, agree I had a heart attack(s) and should be admitted. By the time I was admitted and put in a room, I had missed the dinner served, and had gone 12 hours without food and 10 hours without fluids. They put me on a fluid bag and I went the night without food or anything but ice chips.

Next morning, they told me I had a few small attacks (I knew that) and "probably" 2 large ones ON Wednesday. My reward was going to surgery for a dye test to check arterial flow.

This is the part that is important to everyone over 50, severely overweight, with high blood pressure, or who may not eat right. In ten painless minutes, running a tube into my femoral artery in my leg to my heart, they showed me one artery about 95% plugged. Me, Mr. healthy and Mr. Exercise, an artery clogged 95%. And multiple heart attacks. But surprise, St Clair's is no longer certified for stents (they put one in a clogged artery after compressing the plaque with a tiny balloon). I had to be transported to Morristown memorial for the stent the next morning and had to wait till Saturday to be released.

I take a bucket full of medicine, I am still tired, but I went back to work today. I look forward to the sunrise, my dogs at my feet, and kisses on my cheek from my beautiful daughter, who took care of the dogs while I was in the hospital.

I don't recommend having a heart attack to anyone.

Thanks for listening.

2. A very informative post.

and I'm glad you were able to get medical attention in time. Many aren't so lucky. I just had a friend who just had heart surgery where they injected alcohol into his heart to induce a heart attack to kill sections of his heart. The procedure was experimental but I was fascinated about how far medicine has advanced.

This is why annual physicals are very important, especially if heart disease, high cholestorol, or high blood pressure run in the family.

That couldn't have been easy to go through, but I'm so glad that you had insurance.

My husband had a heart attack in his early 20s; most likely two of them.

He takes a lot of meds and we do everything we can to take care of him.

Get your rest and feel better.

You will be in our thoughts.

My BIL had a heart attack when he was 34! They put a stent in him too, and he is exercising more, quit smoking, and is eating better, so he's doing well, but man, was that a scare! Especially because he and my sister had just had a baby a few months before that.

Take care of yourself (and it sounds like you are!).

60. And they weren't even busy.
They had to wait until the cardiologist arrived to make a determination. Gave me oxygen, hooked a fluid bag up to my arm, kept me hooked up to the EKG machine until the paper ran out. And I'm going to have a few words for my doctor next week too.

23. I'm amazed, too, that it took so long for you...
...to be seen by your doctor and cardiologist. Did ANY doctor see you before that? The hospital near me gets a person with heart attack symptoms in the exam room within two minutes, with a 12-lead EKG right then. Did they at least hook you up to some monitoring while you were waiting?

This is also a good moment to remind everyone to take an aspirin if they have any symptoms of a heart attack. The classic symptom: feels like someone is sitting on your chest. Other symptoms may appear, instead. Left arm or shoulder pain, unexplained sweating and nausea, etc.

Don't wait, don't delay.

The nurses ran the ekg's. I still can't get the glue off of a few spots. They say it wears off naturally. St. Clair's just sucked, And starving me till the next day was even more absurd. The cardiologist said food was ok after admission.

I've seen them whisk in a guy who was obviously experiencing excruciating chest pain. But some of us sit in the waiting room for hours, even in "good" hospitals. Perhaps it's more likely when the symptoms are a little more unclear.

Hubby had a heart attack last year, I drove him to Chilton in Pequannock and they had him undressed and hooked up to the machines by the time I parked the car. Chilton can do emergency stents and he fell into the criteria perfectly....
Doc came in, they have EMTs from Morristown specializing in heart related incidents standing by, in case the stent procedure goes south and you need to have open heart, they take you and the doc right to morristown....
Hubby had the worst artery unclogged in the ER and went a few days later to Morristown for the other one
I am so glad you are ok..... just plain neglect on the Dr.s and hospitals part, and its horrible

Not that you will ever need to again but go to Chilton if you can....
they saved my husbands life...

34. My mother went through something very similar last December.
Edited on Tue Aug-14-07 12:30 PM by Akoto
She was perfectly fine, in her early 50s, and then she got hit with the heart attack. Fortunately, she was taken to the hospital quickly enough that the attack could be stopped. She had a stent placed as well.

We even had the same issue with the hospital not being certified for stent placement, though they didn't tell us until they'd already looked inside of her heart. As such, the entry operation had to be repeated again. That led to quite a battle between our lawyer friend and the hospitals over our bill.

It was a very scary experience for me, and I wasn't even the one with the problem! She's still dealing with it, too. The emotional distress, the tons of pills, etc.

61. We had no insurance. My advice to you ...
Get a lawyer, preferably one that'll work at a reduced cost because of your income. We were fortunate enough that one of my mom's clients was one.

A lawyer will go through your medical bills and negotiate them down on your behalf. Often, said lawyer can nail the hospital with facts on how you've been overcharged, and you'd be surprised at how blatant it is. Our bills were marked WAY up.

You can also arrange it so that the hospital can only speak to your lawyer, and never to you (except to advise you of impending legal action). If they do, they're in violation of a cease and desist, and that can lead to problems for them in court.

With our lawyer's help, we cut our bills from about $75,000 to about $10,000. Still a lot, but I'll take the second number.

6 hours to be seen? WTF? That is messed up.

I'm sorry you went through this. I read an article that says that one of the tests that can be done identifies people who may be at risk for plaque in the arteries. Doctors don't do it too often because it can have a lot of false negatives. I think it's called a CRP or CRT blood test. My doctor did it once (cause I insisted) but he said the blood test is easily affected by diet, time of day etc. I still think it's better to get a false positive and have them check you twice than to have to suffer an attack.

Feel better and don't over do it.

56. My kid was more afraid that I was
And when she said "Dad, you're getting old" I realized she didn't see me as young anymore. Only a year ago she said I wasn't old when I started working out again.

I guess a HA is the great equalizer.

62. write a letter for her, just in case...
DainBramaged, I hope you live many good years yet. I know modern medicine has helped many people with your condition live good, long lives.

But none of us gets any guarantees in life. So please, as a daughter who's desperately missing her father right now, I urge you: write something for your daughter to reassure her when you're gone. A message that she'll read when you're no longer there to speak. When the time comes, that will mean more than anything else you could leave to her.

64. I am so sorry you are going through this
I hope it is uphill from here. My dad is going through some tough times right now, he's just found out he's had two minor heart attacks, he had no idea. Today they did heart catheterization and he doesn't have blockage but he his heart is only working at something like 15 to 20 % capacity. They are recommending a pacemaker and defibrilator but he has to get the stress test first. He has had congestive heart failure and diabetes for the last 6 or 7 years too. It is so scary to think about this stuff. I am glad the procedure went okay and I hope that this takes care of the problem for you.
