Turned 40 this year and it got me thinking. So many of my friends are so busy now, living in far away places and not seeing each other often enough, some not in years, I need to do something about that. So my wife and I planned a bbq at our house and tried to get as many people to come as possible. Sure, many couldn't make it, but about 40 were able to come with like 11 kids and 4 additional dogs to NJ from Boston, CT and NJ some staying the night and it was great. We invited over all the neighbors. It was chaos, but fun, controlled chaos.
We got to meet kids we never met before and share homemade and homegrown food with everyone, and lots of drinks. The kids all made new friends and played together well.
We ate all day and night long. I served:
Tomatoes, cucumbers in various forms from my garden. Homemade German potato salad. Garden salad from my garden. Spicy sausage ragu over pasta. Chicken wings on the grill with my homemade bbq sauce. Hand-made burgers and dogs (of course) Chicken and mango quesadillas with my homemade salsa with cucumbers in it. (yeah, I had a lot of cucumbers) had a friend of the family roast a half a pig for us. I think there was more, but who the hell knows at this point. :D
We had a child's blow up pool full of soda, beer and juice and ice all day long for everyone and ended the day with big ass martinis.
The best thing though was seeing friends you haven't seen in so long, hugs, making new friends and just finally seeing people forget their busy jobs for at least a day or two and just freakin' relax and laugh and smile.
Then I slept for like 12 hours. :D
