Yes - Yet another chinchilla birth- Twins this time (pic heavy)
Having learned a female can get pregnant immediately after giving birth, we separated the Mom and the Dad as soon as we noticed the last birth - but too late it now appears. Twins were born today. No clue as to their gender yet. I'm not peeking having got the last one wrong due to major genital swelling. It was a girl but she looked like a boy at birth. She was fine - just never had a newborn girl before so we didn't know - we named her Peony.

So now I have 6 - count them - 6 - Chinchillas.

2 large cages dominate my otherwise large hallway. It's their domain. We just pass through from time to time.

We'll be looking for good homes for most of them now. And by good I mean - knows and understands that fur belongs to and looks best on - its original owner. The one born wearing it.

I get rather attached so I might decide to keep them - but I would like some of my hallway back.

We got the first 2 when a couple decided they didn't want them any longer. They didn't find the chinchillas friendly. We play with them a lot and they seem to like us.

The newborns:

That's the Mom, Sabine, with one of the twins.

Big brother - Fuego

Stilgar, the Dad.

Big sister - Peony

1. Very cute!
Is birth control available for chinchillas? Sorry if that's a dumb question, but my mother-in-law had her female cat on birth control for a couple of years before getting her spayed, so I wondered whether something similar is available for chinchillas. :hi:

to that as well.

It's a good question. LOL

We now have a boy and girl cage and as soon as the twins can leave their Mom, we'll place them in the proper cage.

As an aside, the Dad knows she gave birth and is shaking the cage with his little hands trying to get out. He's also attempting to shove his big body through the wire. He knows Sabine is "in season" again and it's driving him bonkers. Their cages sit about 3 feet apart and he's not a happy camper.

The big sister is in with her siblings and she's been grooming them. I was worried but it seems she's OK with them and her Mom nips at her from time to time to remind her who's boss.

8. Chins are hysterical!
My nephew had two and I loved to play with them when I visited. I vividly remember the sound of them grabbing the cage lid with their hands and banging it as fast as they could -- I always "heard" a little chin voice going, "Lemme the hell outta here, dammit!"

I love their dust baths, and I especially love how they would wedge themselves between the wall and things like bookcases. :)

Your guys are too cute!

12. LOL! I *hear* that too!!! We had to get one out from behind a bookcase
a few months ago. She was well wedged and didn't want to come out.

Thanks!!

5. Lotsa fuzzies!
If I was capable of keeping my house clean enough that I could let an animal run around here, I'd love to have one. :P Unfortuatnely right now, letting an animal roam free in the house at all, even if it was just to let it out of the cage to run around, would probably be considered animal cruelty.
Which is why I haven't had a pet that weighed more than about half a pound.

6. LOL! They are escape artists. They're fast and can hide well.
We keep the doors closed to the hall and sit with them when they are out...otherwise, we would spend days (and have) rounding them back up. When they are still babies, they can squeeze under doors and we've had them sneak out before.

9. I'd also be worried about my books... I know chinchillas tend to gnaw at things
and I've got a rather extensive collection. Including a few that are irreplacable, like a second edition hardcover copy of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. :)
Still, I like chinchillas. They're very intelligent, and they really seem to understand human interactions. A friend of mine had a pair, and whenever she and her boyfriend argued they couldn't do it in front of the fuzzies, because it would make them upset.

10. They could do some real damage to books...we had to clear the hallway
out of everything except for their stuff for that reason. They chew everything.

They really are very intelligent and they hold grudges too! Tick one off and they will get you back.

11. I've just been sitting with them..watching them play and explore.
I love how they can jump at birth! We keep them in low cages when young to avoid injuries though.

13. OMG - so cute!
I love chins - I wish I could get one (or two) but I have two cats, and I'm afraid of coming home to find myself with one less pet.
