Famous last words
"I am about to -- or I am going to -- die: either expression is correct."
-- Dominique Bouhours, French grammarian, d. 1702

Did anyone ever speak these last words? "I just thought of a remarkably simple proof of Fermat's Last Theorem, but I fear that I don't have enough time to explain it."

8. Hardy/Littlewood
Edited on Mon Aug-13-07 06:23 AM by smedwed
Not quite last words but mathematical.
When undertaking a dangerous sea crossing Hardy wrote a postcard to Littlewood (2 famous English Mathematicians)claiming he had proved Riemann's hypothesis, but hadn't enough room to enclose the proof - in the spirit of Fermat's margin. He believed that God wouldn't let him die until he'd told someone the proof. (despite being an atheist)
He survived.

18. I doubt those were, technically, his last words.
His last words were probably more along the lines of, "Holy Mother of God! Look at all those Indians!"

17. William Blake:
Though better known for his poetry, Blake spent his last days constantly retouching an engraving. Finally done with it, he said, "There! that will do! I cannot mend it."

His wife started to cry, thinking those were his last words, so he said, "Stay, Kate! Keep just as you are. I will draw your portrait, for you have ever been an angel to me."

And then he died.
