Anyone have experience with wi-fi range expanders?

I have municipal wi-fi in my downtown apt, but signal drops in many areas. Stable and strong in one (inconvenient) area.

Does, say, the lynksis signal booster, work well for such an application? Does it both make the signal stronger *and* throw it farther?

And while we are at it, how do antennas in laptops work? Does power draw play a role? (Doesn't seem like physical size from looks of typical router antennas....) Are manufacturers starting to look at improved reception as a selling point?
