Gratuitious Vanity thread
Since they put me on insulin shots I have gained 25 pounds. I'm no longer flatter than Kansas. WoooHooo! :)

Still thin but more like my natural self. Back from the brink again.
Whew.

1. Several years ago, a friend of mine was wasting away.
He was taking the insulin pills, and I guess it wasn't enough of a dosage. No one could believe how thin he was. Then he started taking the shots, and gained weight immediately.

3. It's strange to watch someone eat and starve at the same time
I guess I didn't understand what diabetes was really all about until he fully explained it to me.

5. You need fat to absorb the insulin.
It is odd. My friends were telling me I was getting skinnier and skinnier. And my doc was telling me I was eating too much. Go figure. Diabetes does that to you.

I'll donate 10lbs, if you need them. :-) I don't have THAT much to spare, but 10-20lbs? No problem.

11. lol
I was getting pretty gaunt. Thanks.

I know there have been some posters here who have lost weight. I also know how hard that is to do. It is a success story.

For some gaining it is also. And the battle goes on.

here, but she is a born-again now, and I think she keeps pulling all her old photos off the net... too bad. I don;t know why people who go into RW fundie stuff have to sanitize their past.

22. just curious, if i may ask
what health condition (other than what i can only assume is obvious, diabetes) were you dealing with to make you lose weight, rather than gain? Was this a relatively new situation, or a long time one that you have now changed in your treatment.

I have always been thin, now more than ever, and no matter what i eat, never gain an ounce. I get tired of eating to be honest. But maybe i'm overlooking something. There is a history of diabetes in my family, but it's never shown up in my checkups, and as i've said, i've always been thin.

So just curious as to what changed for you since it seems to be working. Feel free to pm if you want to answer off thread. I don't mind adding that once while receiving treatment for depression some 15 years ago, i was asked to enter a study for anorexia, but in the end didn't fit the criteria they were seeking...i supposed then they were looking at females, and well, as a male, didn't fit for that alone. But i'll never know.

I'm glad you are gaining weight and hope you continue to gain. Boy that sounds unlike what you would hear in this society these days. Especially if you have to buy new clothes!

peace,
dp

23. I don't mind talking about it.
Edited on Sun Jan-25-04 12:30 AM by camero
I was 105 lbs til about 29. I could eat anything and not gain weight. Then I gained about 10 lbs a year til I got diabetes. The fact that my body wasn't using my sugar caused me to lose all the weight back and more within a months time. It is rampant on my dad's side. My mom's side is hypoglycemic.

When your body can't use sugar for fuel it goes to the fat storage. When that is used up it goes to the muscle. The type I have is called
Syndrome X. It's when you still have insulin but your body doesn't metabolize it. I'm still not an expert about diabetes but I think since I got so thin and fat absorbs insulin, I needed insulin to be injected to help retain fat to get the cycle swung around again.

Part of the symptoms of diabetes is that you are always hungry so it wouldn't hurt for you to be checked for it. Ask for a glucose tolerance test. My doc gave me the choice of pills or insulin awhile back but I was still trying to get back to trucking. A lost cause.

PM me if you need anything as per info.

edit: I got diagnosed at 32. I'm 36 now.

24. Thank you camero
i'll look for info on the net, and feel free to point me to any info you may have gotten there too.
As i said earlier i'm never really hungry. Maybe if a day passes without more than one meal. The next i may eat 3, but then never a great amount. I've been checked for diabetes and was told no signs of it. I have a sister with adult onset, and a brother with hypoglycemia. History on both parent's side, but neither parent with it.

I weigh less than or maybe equal to what i did in high school. And i'll be 50 next year....so while i'm used to it, and have learned to deal with it, i always wondered why i couldn't just add a few pounds if i wanted, or if it crept up on me unawares.

thanks for your response, i'll look up the info.

peace,
dp

25. Have you had your thyroid checked?
That also regulates your metabolism.

Here's a good site for info on Syndrome X:
