The dwindling population of bees
There has been a lot in the news about the disappearance of bees.

Here is my story. We recently put in a new garden spot between our deck stairs. Being it too late in Maine to start anything from seed and because I have a perennial bed which will be divided up next year to put in this new space, I had to scrounge around at the area greenhouses for some annuals. On my first trip to the greenhouse, the only plants available were orange and yellow marigolds. I bought some of those and then went to another greenhouse. All I could find were orange and yellow cosmos and some yellow and orange pot marigolds and some white begonias. All plants were very picked over and all showed some root bound fatigue. But that was the only color left, orange and yellow and those white begonias.

We planted those and were still short. Another trip to the greenhouse. But on the way I noticed something really bizarre. Every house I passed had combinations of flowers in red or pink, white and blue (really a purple) There wasn't a yellow or orange flower in a five mile drive. HMMMM.....

But this is the crazy thing, we are now inundated with bees. They can't get enough of those orange and yellow flowers. In past summers, two or three bees were all I noticed. But I can't go out now without seeing the flowers covered by these bees.

What do you guys make of this? Do you think this red, white and blue love your country color scheme on flowers has led to the problems for the bee population?

2. So what you're saying is, you took all the bees
The agricultural industry of North America is going to crash, because of your flowerbed and its orange flowers. Great. Thanks a lot.

BTW bees can't see red, so that's not an issue. They can, and do, pollinate white and blue flowers.

3. Don't know, but I just went up to Augusta and there were bees everywhere. Maybe
it's a Maine thing.
