Ok , I'm giving it 3 months
I am starting to work out and eat right tomorrow. I quit working out 6 years ago when the first kid was born and haven't gotten back to it since. The only time I can do it is 5am so that is going to SUCK! big time. I posted my what celebrity do I look like and got Rudi Juliani (with apology included) so that is motivation enough to do something about the enormity of my face! I do have bouts of "reactive arthritis" (Dr. translation we don't know WTF it is or what causes it)
that flare up in a random knee,or ankle so this all might go straight to hell but wtf something has to be done.

1. I just started a diet too
Try basic modifications--a nice 3 hour hike once a week works wonders.

I've just cut portion sizes, which I should've done anyways, and tried to replace one meal with a low-calorie/fat option. Lost 8 pounds so far :)

Good luck friend!

3. Good for you.
At least you have realized that it might be time to change some of your old habits and start some new ones. Good Luck to you in this process.

:hi: :)

4. I know someone who started running at that hour and came to love it after a bit.
Keep it up. You may enjoy the routine and adult time.

5. that is my hope
the arthritis thing is the X factor. If it flares up it takes 4-5 days before I can put weight on it which gets me out of routine.
Thanks for all the support guys and gals!

19. Way to Go
I'll second underpant's comments farther down in thread. Once you get going and into a routine it's hard to do without the rush you get from exercising regularly.

I started in January '07 with a regular routine of weight machines at the gym 3-4 days a week and biking 3-4 days a week. I've lost @18 pounds and am starting again to have the body I had at age 20. I love the high I get after exercising and I love coming home from the gym or a ride and having a couple of beers and a nice shower. It's a pretty good feeling. I've also lowered my cholesterol significantly just through exercise.

About the reactive arthritis thing. I have what has been diagnosed (after 30 years) as Reiter's Syndrom, a type on reactive arthritis. Mine presents itself as pain and burning on the soles of my feet and the back of my legs, some blurry vision, plus what seems to be a urinary infection. When it was diagnosed my doctor said they were taught to remember the symptoms to diagnose as, "Can't see, can't pee, can't climb a tree". Does this sound familiar to you?

21. Bags
Edited on Wed Aug-01-07 01:18 PM by Rambis
I will be sitting and all of a sudden my sock will feel tight and I know it is happening. Or I start to walk and can feel a bag of fluid on my knee or elbow (pitching elbow) The area feels like it is on fire and if a feather touches it it hurts like hell. I almost passed out when my kid stepped on my foot.. There are no crystals in it so it is not gout but the fluid is as bright yellow as a highlighter. One day they took 22cc off my ankle because I thought it was going to literally explode.
The first few times I went to the Dr. they told me I had been drunk and fallen down and not remembered it. I was pissed and changed not only dr.'s but the hospital as well. I saw the head of rheum and he diagnosed it.

6. I just said that the other day!
Well, most of it. I just started exercising with a three month goal. I have a six-year-old and haven't worked out since she was born and I have bouts of arthritis in the knee, too! :hi:

They used to tell me I looked like Jamie Lee Curtis. I wouldn't want to know who I look like now but give me three months.....

I wish you success!

8. How was the knee?
Good for you that you already got out there and did it! I'm still sitting here in my pajamas. (Well, it is California and only 6:30am) I'll be on the treadmill later today, after work, though.

Hang in there!

9. Maybe a bike with help with the knee
It's a lot less impact. Plus, somedays I just don't feel like running and enjoy a good long ride.

Good luck!

10. Bike
I should ahve opted for that but no I thought I would use the treadmill more and did until the arthritis thing. I walked today and I think I am going to keep walking until I feel comfortable. I fell into the trap of thinking... I used to run 6-7 miles a day what happened because now I can't run for 3 minutes:( I don't need to be in great shape I just need to feel better and lose 30lbs I think I can do that by walking but we will see.
Thanks all

11. In a week or so you are really going to love the 5AM thing
Seriously you feel like you have the world to yourself. I started in the depths of winter and let me tell you summer time at 5AM is a LOT better.

ONce you really get into it you will hate missing a day. I was supposed to do 5 miles or so this morning but I slept right through my wake up. I feel like a useless lump of poo because of it.

15. That's where I want to be
Edited on Wed Aug-01-07 09:13 AM by Rambis
except for the lump of poo part. I used to feel that way and even got runners high once or twice that was cool. I have a long way to go to get back to 5 miles again. I couldn't even run for 3 minutes this am LOL! "But hey, enough of my yackin lets boogie"

16. I actually laugh at myself now
a three mile run used to be my big weekend run now it is about the bare minimum and I HAVE to be done by 6 am. I don't run fast (10:00 miles) so I have to be out the door by 5:15 at the latest.

Even on days that I don't feel like doing it I just get the process started (a few sips of coffee is all I need) get them laced up and get out the door....within a quarter mile or so I realize why I am out there. I have had some fairly horrible-didn't want to do it runs- but I use the FACT that I know that I am going to finish and that I will feel great as a motivation.

Reading running mags helps too even though I never really GOT them until I started training for a marathon.

12. Congratulations and good luck Rambis! I started working out again last year and
it was really hard at first. Now I feel weird if I don't go. And I've lost 75 lbs. If I can do it, anyone can!

20. Good luck!
I did the same thing... stopped working out after becoming a mom... NOT a good idea!

But take heart... doing it early in the morning means your metabolism will be boosted ALL DAY! :D (If you take a nap, though, that re-sets it, so...)

I get knee pains, and used THAT as an excuse to stop working out sometime last year. :P I'm back on the ball now though... we'll see how long it lasts.

22. Half a Freidman is not a fair assessment time ...
give it a full Freidman and then check the results.
