What's your alternative method of disciplining children?
When our kids got fussy and started bickering with each other, instead of spanking we'd instruct them to run around the house a certain number of laps. Genrally, kids bicker when the're bored and antsy. Running a couple laps tends to re-direct their interests into more productive uses of their time than hitting each other. Watching them run past the windows is also a lot more entertaining than sending them to their room, etc and I now have a crop of strong lean young adults!

4. My husband always assigns pushups
and we both give extra chores. You're so right - sometimes it is just a matter of working off excess energy and redirecting their attention. Depending on the nature of the transgression, we've also had our kids write apology notes.

17. Can't take the credit - that's Principal Skinner from "The Simpsons"
Part of what he dreams about when the school might get a sharp increase in funding:

"History books that know how the Korean War ended! Math books without that 'base-six' crap in them! And a state-of-the-art detention center, where children are held in place with magnets!"
