Patty Duke was AMAZING in The Miracle Worker.
I just watched it on video tonight--yes video. I borrowed it from the library. I've been trying to think about other things, but I just keep thinking about this incredible performance by a very young actress who put her whole body into that role. I'm just stunned. Where is she now?

Incredible talent. Even in bad movies, she's superb.

ps: I use a line of hers from the Miracle Worker, now and then. When the kid cleans her room or returns dishes to the sink, I exclaim:
"Mah Helen folded huh napkin!" :)

6. Wasn't she in two versions?
and won Oscars for both of them? She's played both parts.

7. You are correct about two versions, I am not sure about the Oscars
.
.

"Playwright William Gibson's created one of the most beautiful and heartfelt dramas of our time with the inspiring story of Helen Keller and her teacher, Anne Sullivan.

"The Miracle Worker" has been made into movies starring Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke, then Patty Duke and Melissa Gilbert."

And they STILL are great movies !

10. The second one, in which she played Annie Sullivan
was made for TV. I think.

8. The Miracle Worker
at age 15 (she was 13 when she began playing the role on Broadway, I believe) was absolutely stunning. Since she says only one word at the end, she has to convey everything with postures and facial expressions, and she does a magnificent job.

It's too bad she got sidetracked into that silly sitcom so early and then had those issues with her very controlling guardians. With better guidance, she could have been an A list choice for serious films.

9. According the site Lostmessage posted above
she was considered for and offered roles in several big movies, like The Graduate (Katherine Ross's role) and Sterile Cuckoo (Liza Minelli's). She either turned them down or wasn't able to take them on.

12. The original 1962 one, by Arthur Penn.
I haven't seen the one with Melissa Gilbert as Helen. Have you?

13. Yes, and I don't think Melissa was as good as Helen as
she was.
