3. Floyd, Rush, Yes, Zappa, and the last always varies. It's Tull now.
Sometimes it's Zeppelin, sometimes Genesis, sometimes Fripp. I have a list of maybe ten or so bands that rotate in this category.

But Floyd, Rush, Zappa, and Yes are always at the top.

57. When did Scott Litt ruin them?
I stopped listening after "Automatic For The People." That album mostly sucked.

But I loved everything they had done up until then. Can't listen to anything since.

I'd be curious to know when you think they jumped the shark.

Petty stole the name Heartbreakers. I don't think that Johnny even cared.

I love the Hell era Heartbreakers, but that didn't last too long. The classic 'breakers line-up was even better IMO: Thunders, Nolan, Lure and Rath.

Edited on Fri Jul-27-07 03:27 PM by bedpanartist

The Ass Ponys. I've never heard a bad Ass Ponys song, and the great ones rank this now retired Southwestern Ohio superband, and it's leader and founder Chuck Cleaver, with six recordings of some of the greatest American songs ever penned.

"The Okra Years is among the finest Alternative Rock releases of 2006. Not only is the music brilliant, but Cleaver's assemblage of songs is tremendously satisfying, creating a roller-coaster ride of chilling, brooding pieces that allow the listener to tumble into the psychotic aspects of relationships, and then speed things up to ascend peaks of wry, eccentric humor. And the cover art is mostly Cleaver originals nicked from show flyers when the band was making their way through the tumultuous club scene of the South and Northeast.

While my friend Kara was all wet about The Ass Pony's being the reincarnation of The Velvets, she was spot on about the genius this band displayed from their early days. The Ass Ponys may never be the seminal influence the Velvets were, but in their own way, Chuck Cleaver and his mates allowed alternative rock to take giant strides in an industry that tends to eschew anything that doesn't have commercial appeal. For that, and the originality they so consistently offered, the have my undying gratitude."

Mojo Nixon and the Toadliquors

On an hot Saturday night in a smoky, liquor and beer soaked music club (I always saw Mojo at the Canal Street Tavern in Dayton, Ohio), it's pretty hard to find a band that was as entertaining and flat out rocking while delivering spot-on social commentary and hilarity that you could dance to. I'll never forget rocking out to "Debby Gibson is Pregnant with my Two Headed Love Child, or the prophetic American anthem and call to action "Burn Down the Malls" while Mojo sweated like an Arkansas Razorback just a couple of feet away.

Half Japaneese

From Wikipiedia: Half Japanese is a seminal punk rock band formed by brothers Jad and David Fair in their Uniontown, Maryland bedroom around 1975 - 1977 along with Mark Jickling and the Dreyfuss brothers:Ricky and John. Like The Shaggs, the Fair brothers were self-taught and thoroughly unconventional musicians; their early raw, unvarnished sound careened between naïvely amateurish-sounding noodling, primitivism and avant-garde experimentation. Jad is most known for making a mockery of musicians by pretending to play guitar which after thirty years, he is still not playing in an orthodox way. An actual guitarist for his band even commented in their documentary that he knows "one or two" chords.

Frank Zappa and the Mother's of Invention:

Quite simply, Zappa was the most talented American of the 20th century. In the words of drummer Terry Bozio, "he could have been a phenomenal superstar in probably 10 or more different fields." He is certainly missed.

I caught the Zappa plays Zappa show in Columbus, Ohio last night and it was amazing. His music is still way ahead of the times.

Slayer

They rocked so hard that fans carved their logo into their skin with razor blades.

5 is a little iffy. Maybe Tom Petty and the Heartbrakers, Kansas, or Foreigner.

Edited on Sat Jul-28-07 03:06 PM by Blue_In_AK
Pink Floyd
Led Zeppelin
The Byrds
Country Joe & the Fish
Jimi Hendrix Experience

Showing my age. :)

Oh, and I would have to add 13th Floor Elevators as one of my personal faves, although they probably wouldn't make anybody's "list."

Also, CSNY, Buffalo Springfield, any combination. Too many good bands to mention. I like a lot of the choices above. I'm no Stones fan, though.

71. U2, the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, the Who, the Clash
This is trying to be objective rather than my personal favorites.

Why is it that the 90s and the 00s don't seem to produce rock bands of the same caliber?
