HARRY POTTER question: Was Sirius Black in Slytherin or Gryffindor?

Just curious. I couldn't see where the books spelled it out one way or the other.

only because he was such a good friend of Lili and James Potter. But that doesn't explain Peter Pettigrew, who turned out to be a rat. (literally and figuratively!)
