It's the Olestra appreciation thread!!
Edited on Sun Jul-15-07 06:48 AM by HypnoToad
(note, this post is :sarcasm: )

It came into being in 1968, but hasn't been used in mass market products until the late-1990s.

Olestra robs the body of numerous vitamins, including A, D, E, and K by dissolving them.

Olestra reduces the fat element to 0. Unfortunately, the calorie element remains sky high. Calories unburned get turned into fat. Net result for the consumer? A savings of nothing.

Best of all, Olestra is known for causing flatulence and diarrhea. Hot diggity. And not in a health, detoxifying sort of way either...

Anybody else proud to support the ingestion of this product? :9

And why is Firefox's spell checker acting so inconsistent this morning? Maybe there is an electronic equivalent to Olestra...

:hurts:

Addendum - the new drug "Alli" is also known for causing flatulence, diarrhea, and inhibits absorption of vitamins A, D, E, and K. I wonder if there's a link between this product and Olestra.

13. Your post isn't 100% accurate.
I hate to go all Sanjay Gupta, but I'll do it anyway:

Olestra reduces the fat element to 0. Unfortunately, the calorie element remains sky high. Calories unburned get turned into fat. Net result for the consumer? A savings of nothing.

The fat-free Olestra potato chips are still less calories than the normal ones, by about half. "Sky high" is a relative term; people burn different calories in different ways. Some people do really well by avoiding fats, others eating with low-carb calories, and still others by following a vegetarian diet.

The incontinence, flatulence, and depletion of vitamins might be better than being obese, at least to some people? Especially the 2/3s of people NOT affected by those side effects?

Of course, it's probably better to just avoid potato chips altogether...
