Comparing Liberty U to the taliban makes absolutely no sense. Why? Because the taliban imposed its radical fundamentalism on ALL THE PEOPLE, regardless of whether that's who they wanted to rule them. Liberty U imposes its radical fundamentalism only on people who choose to have it imposed upon them.

I agree, there are some scary extreme fundamentalists in the administration, and it's frightening. But what goes on at a private religious school has nothing to do with it.

If Falwell, Robertson, Phelps and the like get their way, schools like Liberty, Bob Jones and Campbell won't be little microcosms of society. We'll all be living that way, and there won't be any graduation.

I can foresee a day when being an active member of a Protestant church will be required as a condition of employment anywhere in America. Voting registration will be incumbent upon being a dues-paying member of a Protestant church--the farther to the right, the better. I can see a day when being a non-Protestant will be a crime--it will first be a misdemeanor, then finally a felony. (One day I was reading the paper and came upon this sentence: Christians, Catholics and Mormons gathered to praise the Lord for the destruction of Rick's Lounge. Christians, Catholics and Mormons. Last I checked, Catholics and Mormons were Christians too. And for the record, Rick's was a world-famous strip club in downtown Fayetteville before they tore it down to build the new police station.)

And it scares me.

I don't want to live in a country where "freedom of religion" means "you're free to go to this Baptist church or that Baptist church, but not to stay home on Sunday." But if the Falwells and Robertsons get their way, that's what will happen.

I have imagined your scenario, and it scares me, too. But here's why I don't think these people will get their way: their schools, contrary to what some might think, do NOT churn out 100% of their students as life-long jackbooted lock-stepping fascists.

I grew up as a fundy and until age 23 I never questioned at thing. I went to Huntington Valley Baptist Church in Orange County, CA (I grew up behind the Orange Curtain, Rohrabacher and B-1 Bob Dornan country) and attended Los Angeles Baptist College (now http://www.masters.edu) in L.A. County. I had my first lover on that campus. (I'm a lesbian. So was she. But being a good Baptist, she'll never admit it.)

Again, I don't feel anyone has the right to bash these schools because of their rules. They may hate the way we believe and we may hate the way they believe, but around here that's allowed.

Students go in with their eyes wide open. How do I know this? Because religious fundamentalists would see if the kids were stoned when they signed on the dotted line. Ha.

Anecdotal? Yes. But both my sisters and many of my classmates turned out the same way I did: my sisters are both atheists; I'm a spiritual mutt; my classmates are atheist, agnostic, mutt, etc.

Perhaps this'll offer a few folks hope. I hope so.

PS Not in defense of Falwell & Robertson et al: Don't put Phelps in with them. He swims in his own private little vat of the most vile, filthy, hateful, mean, murderous vat of bile on the planet, and has pushed most of his progeny into the vat, too. The other religious guys are bad, but they can't touch Phelps.
