You Know You're Driving In Austin, Texas When.....
1) The traffic light changing from YELLOW to RED means 5 more cars get to go.

2) There is no such thing as a road that is completely "finished"... They are ALL under construction.

3) You may have gotten there faster if you would have just walked instead.

4) People actually take the time to look you in the eye before they pull out in front of you, causing you to slam on your brakes to avoid hitting them.

5) When cars travel between intersection A and B you'd swear gasoline was free... But when the light turns green, suddenly no one is in any kind of a hurry. It's almost as if they WANT to sit through the traffic light again.

6) You see $5000 cars with $10,000 worth of accessories/upgrades attached to them.

etc., etc., etc...

3. Not quite...
that's more like my original hometown up in rural northeast Texas as opposed to my adopted home in Austin.

Here all the pickup trucks have "Keep Austin Weird" bumperstickers on them. :-)

9. Austin was the best
until the tech "boom" destroyed much of its appeal. It remains the coolest and most progressive place in Texas.

I still want to retire there. (TexasEx class of '76)

Velma, I endured high school in DeKalb, as rural and northeast as you can be in Texas. Where were you?

16. i have a funny story about that...
i was on a road between dalhart and dumas texas on my way to dallas. I look to my left, and i shit you not, there were 7 guys in the back of an old white pickup truck, all wearing day-glo orange vests and toting shotguns...

I'm just glad i didn't get a flat, i wouldn't have wanted to get mistaken for a coyote.

Plus they can't keep the damn cats out of their cars at night because

4. When you see your standard issue "Austin" bumper stickers such as:
"Keep Austin Weird"
"SOS" (save our springs)
"Waterloo Records"
"I break for 'one eyed salamanders'
"Barton Springs Pool"
"I love Panchos" - wait that's only on my car.

31. LOL, no it's kind of a local thing.
We have this beautiful natural springs pool here called Barton Springs. Everyone enjoys it, (but it is cold as hell!). It has an endangered species of salamander that lives in it. Every other week there seems to be a polution scare that causes the pool to close down to protect the rare, "one eyed salamander".

34. You know you're in Austin when the old airport
signs are still there on the highways, and you can drive around for three hours following the signs and still not get to Bergstrom. The first time I flew out of Austin, I missed my flight, even though we arrived in Austin four hours prior to the flight time. We even stopped to ask directions and kept getting bad information from the locals (probably the Manitoba plates on my wife's car). Grrrrrr, they should have made it illegal for any TX politician to run for higher officeuntil they cleaned up the roads in their own damned capital city!

Every road has three or four names.

Take Ben White Blvd. aka, Hwy 360, aka, Capital of Texas Highway...

or

Hwy 183, aka Ed Bluestien, aka, Research...

Or East 1st street, aka Cesar Chavez

Or Hwy 71 west that is on the south side of town, and doesn't connect to 71 east until the north side of town.

82. They put out a "best of" CD every year, I think.
But, they may be available only locally... Or maybe you can order one on the web.

I don't know how many of these still count

The $500 deductible doesn't cover getting your longhorns back on your hood after an accident.

All the streets around UT are automatically reclassified as parking lots on gameday.

You try drive fast enough to jump the humps on the lower half of I-35

You say "what the fuck" and drive naked from from Hippy Holler to skinny dip in Barton Springs.

You think you hit the lotto if you find a parking spot on 6th St on a weekend night.

You think you hit the lotto if you find a parking spot within five blocks of 6th St on a weekend night.

Drive Ben White Blvd between 4pm and 6pm? You got more balls than I do.

You consider driving over a armadillo or a skunk a necessary badge of honor.

You're comforted by the fact that most of the streets have no sidewalks. That way those pesky pedestrians don't get in the way.
